Shirley Mae Mekosch

shirley mekoschFuneral services for 82-year-old Shirley Mae Mekosch of Windom, Minnesota, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday morning, September 28, 2015, at Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom. The church is located at 1157 3rd Avenue.

Visitation will be at LaCanne Family Funeral Service of Windom, located at 2280 6th Avenue, on Sunday, September 27, 2015, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church the day of the funeral service from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Shirley Mae Mekosch peacefully passed away in her home on Tuesday, September 22, 2015.

Shirley Mae Mekosch was born May 19, 1933, in Cedar Township, Martin County, Minnesota the daughter of the late August Henry and Fredericka Carolina (Reigel) Nordhausen, Jr. She received her education from The Minnesota School for the Deaf in Faribault, Minnesota.

On February 2, 1952, Shirley was united in marriage to Verdienne Frederick Mekosch, Sr. In 1963, along with their eight children, they moved to Windom. After Verdienne’s passing in 2008, Shirley remained in the family home surrounded by the many people who loved her.

Recently Shirley’s health began to decline.

Shirley was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior and was strong in her faith. Her greatest joys were her family, her grandchildren, her diva cat Sweet Pea, playing solitaire and dancing.

Shirley will be fondly remembered for kindness, generosity and the love she showed to everyone whose life she touched, her wonderful sense of humor and the world’s best hugs.

Shirley’s grateful family includes Adolph Mekosch of Jackson, Minneosta, James (Laurel) Mekosch of Windom, Verdienne Jr. (Helen) Mekosch of Jackson, Sheila (Daniel) Altman of Lakefield, Minnesota, Steven Mekosch of Windom and Brenda (Jerry) Pullar, Jr. of Windom; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; siblings, Coleman (Judy) Nordhausen of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Lorraine Carlson of Trimont, Minnesota, Roger (Wanda) Nordhausen of Trimont and Frederick Nordhausen of Butterfield; one sister-in-law, Margaret Nordhausen of Elk River, Minnesota and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Douglas; daughter, Susan; grandson, Nicolas Larsen; brothers, Keith Nordhausen and Gordon Nordhausen and brother-in-law, Lyle Carlson.
