Song ‘Beads on One String’ emphasizes we’re one world

Minnesota entertainer Dennis Warner brings this connection to MLPL’s 2017 Summer Reading Program

We’re all Beads on One String,

Every man, every woman, boy and girl,

Beads on One String, We’re one world.

The song “Beads on One String,” by Minnesota folk singer, songwriter and entertainer Dennis Warner began simply as an uptempo and fun song about how, “We’re more alike than we are different.”

The words of Warner’s song then evolved into a children’s book illustrated by Alison Love Unzelman. That combination then led to the creation of “The Beads on One String Project,” an elementary school curriculum used across the country as a meaningful and fun way to teach kids about the negative effects of bullying, the positive effects of recognizing a “connectedness” to each other by embracing diversity and provides for character education and positive behavioral intervention and supports.

Warner shared additional sing-a-long numbers on top of his program’s centerpiece musical selection.

Warner describes his performances in this way: It’s not enough to just show up and sing a few songs. I’m an entertainer at heart. My concert is more than the music. It want it to be fun, and hopefully, a bit through-provoking, too. It’s also the conversation, the stories and the connection. I am grateful to be given that opportunity. Peace.

Warner appeared in Mountain Lake Public LIbrary (MLPL) this afternoon (Tuesday, June 13) as one link in the 2017 Summer Reading Program, Reading by Design. His program was funded with money from Minnesota’s Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.

MLPL Head Librarian Carol Lehman encourages the area’s young readers to take part in this summer’s reading program, with this participation leading them to “imagine . . . read . . . design.”

Part of the program is a “Make & Take” craft activity at the library every Tuesday afternoon stretching until August 1 (excluding June 20 and July 4). This is a “Come & Go” activity. Children may stop by to work on a craft project any time between the hours of 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

MINNESOTA FOLK SINGER, songwriter – and entertainer – Dennis Warner shares about his love for homegrown tomatoes in the song with the same name, “Homegrown tomatoes, homegrown tomatoes. What’d life be without homegrown tomatoes. Only two things that money can’t buy. That’s true love and homegrown tomatoes.”
MEMBERS OF WARNER’S audience get caught up in the tempo of “Homegrown Tomatoes.”
THE YOUNG READERS gathered for the program whistled their way through a couple choruses of “Homegrown Tomatoes,” including above, from left, Nevaeh Ott, Adalynn Kufahl and Tienna Hopper.
LOGAN BRUGMAN, TOO, whistles his way through the song’s chorus.
“TAKE ME OUT to the ball game. Take me out with the crowd. Buy me some peanuts and Crackerjacks, I don’t care if I never get back.Let me root, root, root for the home team. If they don’t win, it’s a shame. For it’s one, two, three strikes – you’re out at the old ball game.” Teaming up with Dennis Warner, left, to lead the crowd in the well-known baseball song are Braxton Brown, center and Khloe Saelee, right.
