Hesston College Bel Canto singers to present concert

Program slated for May 18 at Bethel Mennonite; Butterfield native is conductor

The Bel Canto Singers of Hesston College in Hesston, Kansas, will present a diverse repertoire of choral music on Thursday, May 18, at 7 p.m., at Bethel Mennonite Church in Mountain Lake. The church is located at 301 9th Street North.

The program entitled God Is Near is inspired by the call to seek out faith in our lives. The concert features a cappella works, selections with organ or piano and special music by soloists and small ensembles. The 22-member, mixed chamber choir is conducted by Dr. Russell Adrian, a Butterfield native, and accompanied by Kenneth Rodgers.

This fall marks the 33rd season for Bel Canto Singers, the premier choral ensemble of Hesston College. The ensemble carries out ambitious concert and touring schedules annually. Combining high artistic standards with unique performance opportunities, Bel Canto Singers offers first- and second-year college musicians experiences typically reserved for third- and fourth-year students. Recent juried appearances have included performances for Chanticleer, the King’s Singers, Charles Bruffy, and the Rose Ensemble.

Sopranos are Adele Hofer (Denver, Colorado), Elizabeth Miller (Pettisville, Ohio), Mackenzie Miller (Lancaster, Pennsylvania), Sarah Miller (Freeman, South Dakota), Grace Roth (Goshen, Indiana) and Shalee Rowley (Colorado Springs, Colorado).

Altos include Sarah Booth (Goessel, Kansas), Erin Brubaker (Goessel, Kansas), Kathryn Leichty (Harrisonburg, Virginia), Hannah Miller (Parnell, Iowa), Sadie Prowell (Lenexa, Kansas) and Hannah Yoder (Freeman, South Dakota).

Tenors are Billy Bass (Yoder, Kansas), Luke Hertzler (Harrisonburg, Virginia), Trevor Oyer (Hubbard, Oregon) and Jonah Short-Miller (Bellingham, Washington).

Basses are Joel Brejda (Lincoln, Nebraska), Andre Eanes (Harrisonburg, Virginia), John Ebaugh (Holtwood, Pennsylvania), Tyler Huffman (Goshen, Indiana); Jeff Kauffman (Hutchinson, Kansas) and Noah Yoder (Harrisonburg, Virginia).

Bel Canto Singers represents a broad sampling of academic pursuits, from science to communications to music majors. Hesston College is the two-year liberal arts college owned by Mennonite Church USA.
