Clarence Blomgren Jr.

Celebration of Life Services for 83-year-old Clarence Blomgren Jr. of St. James, Minnesota, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday morning, June 2, 2017, at First Lutheran Church in Butterfield, Minnesota, with Karen Koeder officiating. The church is located at 450 2nd Street South.

Interment will be in Butterfield City Cemetery, located south of the city on Watonwan County Road #5. Military honors will be conducted by the Butterfield VFW Post Honor guard.

Visitation will be at the church on Thursday, June 1, 2017, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and again on the day of the service from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Clarence Blomgren passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Clarence Edward Blomgren Jr. was born February on 19, 1934 in Pipestone, Minnesota, the son of Clarence and Margaret (Houselog) Blomgren. Clarence grew up on the family farm near Elkton, South Dakota. He graduated from Elkton High School in 1952. He worked on the family farm and several other jobs before joining the United States Army in 1956, and served until 1958. Upon his return, he went to work for the railroad on the track maintenance crew.

On July 8, 1961, Clarence was united in marriage to Vivian Pierson at First Lutheran Church in Butterfield. They made their home in Elkton for four years before being transferred by the railroad to Cedar Rapids, Iowa and later, Lasalle, Illinois, and then moved to Butterfield in 1969 when they purchased their own farm. They moved to Mt. Lake in 1993 and into St. James in 2016. Clarence retired from active farming in 2005, but continued to help out.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Butterfield, where he served on church council and was a Sunday School teacher. He was active in 4-H, served on the Watonwan County Fair Board, served on the Butterfield-Odin Public School Board, enjoyed woodworking, could fix anything, enjoyed birdwatching, gardening and yard work. Clarence also enjoyed card games and playing checkers. He loved spending time with his family and time with grandkids.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian Blomgren of St. James; children, Kent Blomgren of Huxley, Iowa, Kurt Blomgren of Butterfield, Kyle (Kim) Blomgren of Butterfield, Cory (Joan) Blomgren of Lamberton, Minnesota and Karen (Brad) Olson of River Falls, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Jenna, Vance, Stuart (Kyeanna), Kyle Jr., Adam, Anna, Thomas, Liana, Evan, Abigail, Ryan, Anders, Kathryn, Trenton and Osten and sister, Emma Jean Blomgren of Ellsworth, Minnesota.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Audrey Lorden and grandson, Ross Blomgren.
