Elwood Elg

Services in memory of 90-year-old Elwood Elg of Darfur, Minnesota, will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 27, 2017, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Darfur. The church is located on Main Street. The clergy will be Chaplain Lyla Klee.

Interment will be in the church cemetery, located on Minnesota Highway 30 west of Darfur.

Visitation will be on Sunday, March 26, 2017, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Sturm Funeral Home-Comfrey Chapel, located at 101 North Field in Comfrey, Minnesota, and will continue at the church on Monday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Elwood Elg passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington, Minnesota.

Elwood Garland Elg was born on February 24, 1927, in Comfrey, the son of Eben and Hazel (Nelson) Elg. He graduated from Comfrey Public School in in 1945. He joined the United States Navy at the age of 17 and served for one tour of duty upon the U.S.S. Shields and received an honorable discharge.

When he returned home, he began his farming career and on October 12, 1948, married Irene Kruse. He farmed in partnership with his brother, Donald Elg, from 1959 until his retirement in 1998. He also worked part time for Sawatzky Livestock in Darfur.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and held various posts. He was also a lifetime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Darfur, where he served on the church and cemetery boards.

He loved watching sports, was an avid weather watcher, and especially loved visiting with family and many friends.

Survivors include his children, Kevin and wife, Dawn Elg of Mankato, Minnesota, Myron and wife, Connie Elg of Dickens, Iowa and Virginia and husband, Darwin Thiessen of Darfur; grandchildren, Trever (Danielle) Elg, Melissa Elg, Cassandra (Rob) MacCarty, Jessica Elg, Anthony Thiessen (Destiny Ruehling) and Bridget Thiessen; great-grandchildren, Zoey Elg, Kimber Elg and Collin MacCarty; brother, Donald Elg and sister, Lorraine Elg.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Irene.
