Gertrude ‘Gertie’ Dougherty

gertrude-doughertyFuneral services for 78-year-old Gertrude “Gertie” Dougherty of Madelia, Minnesota, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, November 9, 2016, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madelia. The church is located at 406 West Main Street.

A private interment will take place at a later date.

Visitation will be held at the church the day of the funeral services from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Sturm Funeral Home-St. James Chapel of St. James, Minnesota, is handling the arrangements.

Gertrude “Gertie” Doughtery passed away on Friday, October 28, 2016, at Mayo Clinic-St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Gertrude Elaine “Gertie” Dougherty was born on September 8, 1938 in St. James, the daughter of Walter and Ruth (Arneson) Hoffman. She was raised on a farm and attended school in St. James.

She married Francis “Stub” Dougherty on January 7, 1956, and they later divorced. She worked many years at Stone Brothers Hatchery in Madelia. Gertie also worked for 28 years as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at the Luther Memorial Home in Madelia until her retirement.

In 2009, she reconnected with a special friend, Dean Martin.

After retirement, she spent most of time with her dog, Jasmine “Boobies;” cooking; going out to coffee with friends; going to the grocery store and playing with/feeding her stray cats and kittens that she adopted. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gertie is survived by her children, Chris (Ron) Dannhoff of Hartford, South Dakota, Jeffrey “Butch” Dougherty of Mountain Lake, Minnesota, Bradley “Jake” Dougherty and special friend, Melanie Bidwell-Robb of Madelia and Karen Becker and special friend, David Konakowitz of Hanska, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Marie (Sam) Christenson of St. James; sisters-in-law from her previous marriage, Viola Oliver and Tina Diel both of St. James and Ginger Dougherty of Madelia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter (Ruth) Hoffman; sisters, Edith, Karen and Darlene; daughter, Vicki Hoffman; grandson, Joshua Forstner and special friend, Dean Martin.
