A memorial service for 88-year-old Emy Lou Nelson, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning, November 2, 2016, at George Boom Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Sioux Falls. The funeral home is located at 3408 East 10th Street.
Her family will be present to greets friends on Tuesday, November 1, 2016, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at George Boom Funeral Home.
Emy Lou Nelson passed away on Monday, October 23, 2016, at Bethany Nursing Home in Sioux Falls.
Emy Lou Amundson was born on May 15, 1928, in Minneota, Minnesota, the daughter of Abner and Olympia (Holm) Amundson. She graduated from Garretson High School in Garretson, South Dakota, in 1946 and then attended Stewart’s Beauty School. Following completion of her training, she began her life-long career as a beauty operator.
Emy Lou was united in marriage with O. Kermit Nelson on July 19, 1946 at Palisade Lutheran Church near Garretson. The couple farmed before moving to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1950. While living in Sioux Falls, she worked for Elenor Lane’s Beauty Salon, and then started her own beauty shop, Emy Lou’s Beauty Parlor.
Emy Lou loved pretty hair, nails and jewelry, and she is sure to make Heaven more beautiful as a “fashionable angel.” She was very proud of her Icelandic heritage. She was an active member of East Side Lutheran Church and was a part of Ladies of the Moose #273. Emy Lou enjoyed painting, drawing, watching her soap operas (and later discussing the day’s happenings with Donna Mae), having lunch and shopping with her dear friends. She and Kermit enjoyed dancing together and spending time with their friends and family.
Emy Lou is survived by her children, Nancy Nelson of Mountain Lake, Minnesota and Randy Nelson and his wife, Sara of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; grandson, Jacob Nelson of Alpine, Texas; two step-grandchildren, Julie Ross and her husband, Mike Glem and Andy Ross and his wife, Angela, all of White Bear Lake; four step-great-grandchildren; brother, Richard Amundson and his wife, Ella of Port Wing, Wisconsin; sister, Alice Ann Johnson and her husband, Skip of Laveta, Colorado; godson, Gale Benson and his wife, Mary Jo of Sioux Falls; cousin, Barb Foltz and her husband, Dave if Rock Rapids, Iowa and her very special cousin, Donna Mae Benson of Sioux Falls.
She was preceded in death by her husband, O. Kermit Nelson; her parents, Abner and Olympia Amundson; special cousins, Wallace Lincoln Benson, Bill Holm and Doris Benson; many beloved feline and canine friends and many beloved family members.
