irene-doughertyFuneral services for 84-year-old Irene G. Dougherty of St. James, Minnesota, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, September 14, 2016, at the First Presbyterian Church in St. James with Reverend Leah Elrod officiating. The church is located at 706 3rd Avenue South.

Interment will be at Butterfield City Cemetery in rural Butterfield, Minnesota, at 12:45 p.m. The cemetery is located south of Butterfield on Watonwan County Road 5.

Visitation will be at the First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, September 13, 2016, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and again on the day of the funeral service from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Sturm Funeral Home-St. James Chapel, is handling the funeral arrangements.

Irene G. Dougherty passed away on Saturday afternoon, September 10, 2016, at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James.

Irene Genevieve (Nelson) Dougherty, daughter of Hans and Ella (Brenden) Nelson, was born on August 14, 1932 in Long Lake Township, Watonwan County, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at the Long Lake Lutheran Church of rural St. James.

Irene married Eugene Dougherty Jr. on April 17, 1948 at the Long Lake Lutheran Church. Eugene passed away in September 1978. Irene worked for five years at Green Giant in St. James and 18 years at Tony Downs in Madelia, Minnesota.

She enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the family’s lake cabin, where she loved to fish. She was a member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries in St. James.

She is survived by her children, Dennis (Diana) Dougherty of Copperas Cove, Texas, Bruce (Rachel) Dougherty of St. James, Douglas Dougherty of Whitney, Barbara (Sylvan) Stroschein of Ormsby, Minnesota and Brenda (Daniel) Fredin of St. James; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law Carl (Rose) Dougherty and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Eugene; parents; brothers, Ludvig, Selmer, Oliver and Alvin Nelson; sisters, Esther Sands and Myrtle Dougherty; brothers-in-law Harry, Edward, Robert, and Harold Dougherty and Verner Sands and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Pittman, Jeannette Rempker, Margaret and Betty Nelson, and Eleanora Dougherty.
