The girls and boys Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverines basketball squads dished out an important “assist” stat in assisting in research for the fight against cancer during their seventh-annual “Coaches vs. Cancer” night on Friday, January 15. The doubleheader game night against Southwest Christian of Edgerton, combined with special events and activities, raised $2,078.67 – all of which will be presented to the Cottonwood County Relay For Life.

Special fundraising activities included:

+ A chili and soup supper, sponsored by the Mountain Lake Fire Department. Proceeds went to Walt Beedy, former Mountain Lake Public High School mathematics instructor, Mountain Lake boys’ basketball book/stats keeper for 30+ years – and cancer patient

+ Wall of Hope recognizing those affected by cancer through donor donation.

+ Silent Raffle, with a wide variety of prizes, including elementary class projects

+ Lightning Games at halftime of both the girls and boys games.

+ Recognition of and Moment of Silence for people affected by cancer prior to the tip-off of the Boys’ game.

+ Coaching staffs of both teams dressed up in pink – and suits-‘n’-sneakers – in support of those affected by cancer.

+ Those attending the games wore pink to show their support in the cancer fight.

Boys Head Coach Shawn Naas, along with Girls Head Coach Wayne Klassen, thank all who made the night a success. Their list includes: those who wore their jeans and sneakers and donated money, those who bought a T-shirt, those who took a chance and donated to the raffle drawing and silent auction, those who donated items for the raffle, those who donated and worked on the Wall of Hope, those decorated the Mountain Lake Public Elementary School projects for the silent auction and those who assisted at the raffle table and with lightning basketball – and to those who attended the games. Says Coach Naas, “Together we all raised the awareness of cancer.”
