leon sandbergA Celebration of Life Service for Leon Sandberg, 75, of St. James, Minnesota, will be 11 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday morning, November 19, 2015), at Augustana Lutheran Church in St. James, with Pastor Kathleen Ulland-Klinkner officiating. The church is located at 603 Armstrong Boulevard North.

Burial will be in Kansas Lake Lutheran Cemetery in rural Butterfield, Minnesota.

Visitation will be tonight (Wednesday, November 18, 2015) until 7 p.m.. at the Kramer Family Funeral Home in Trimont, Minnesota, located at 71 2nd Avenue S. Leon Sandberg passed away on Monday morning, November 16, 2015 at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Society in St. James.

Leon Clayton Sandberg was born March 20, 1940 to O. Leonard and Clara (Ellanson) Sandberg in Watonwan County, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at Kansas Lake Lutheran Church in rural Butterfield. Leon attended and later was a 1958 graduate of Butterfield High School.

On May 6, 1961, Leon was united in marriage to Viola Munsterman at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in St. James. In 1962, they began farming in Rosendale Township, Watonwan County and enjoyed raising their three children, Mark, Paula and Karen. During his time on the farm, he took great pride in his work of raising a lot of hogs, and also corn and soybeans.

In 1999, after almost 30 years on the farm, they moved into St. James. Leon was employed for various grocery stores, Creative Touch Floral and a hog confinement operation before disability and ill health forced complete retirement and he was cared for at home by Viola. He enjoyed being taken care of by Viola and be taken on car rides by her. Leon also enjoyed raising roses and sharing them.

On July 3, 2014, he became a resident of Pleasant View Good Samaritan Home in St. James. He was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church in St. James and a former member of Kansas Lake Lutheran Church in rural Butterfield.

Survivors include his wife, Viola Sandberg of St. James; his three children, son, Mark (Brenda) Sandberg of St. James and daughters, Paula (Simon) Lubale of Bismark, North Dakota and Karen (Jared) Gosdin of St. Paul, Minnesota; grandchildren, Brooke (Joe) Nett of Bismark, Derek Sandberg of St. Cloud, Minnesota and Rachael Lubale and Jonah Lubale both of Bismark; great-grandsons, Eli and Nolan Nett of Bismark; two brothers, Arden Sandberg of rural Butterfield and Duane (Maureen) Sandberg of Graettinger, Iowa; niece, Julie (Dan) Ostheimer of Boston, Massachusetts; nephew, Brian (Jenna) Riley of Waukee, Iowa and other relatives and friends.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Lois; infant grandson, David Lubale; father and mother-in-law, Clarence and Helen Munsterman and other relatives.
