Time for some fun and games

Young readers from MLPL’s Summer Reading Program in friendly competition

The young readers from Mountain Lake Public Library’s (MLPL’s) 22015 Summer Reading Program – “Read to the Rhythm” – took time for some fun and games in friendly competition during the annual Game Day on Tuesday afternoon, July 21.

A tradition in the library’s summer reading program schedule, Game Day featured a trio of relay races, Bingo and prizes and candy treats.

Below are some photos from Game Day:

game day 1
THE 24 YOUNG readers participating in Game Day divided into three teams of eight for the relay races – and they are off!

game day 2
THE FIRST RELAY featured the competitors racing to a piece of bubble gum, unwrapping it – chewing, chewing, chewing – and then blowing a bubble, before returning to their teams and tagging off to their teammate next in line. Above, Alana Morey pops the unwrapped piece of bubble gum in her mouth.

game day 4
LUKE KLASSEN, WITH a mouthful of bubble gum, works hard to soften it up enough in order to blow a bubble.

game day 5
AND THEN – WHEN the gum is just right, it is maneuvered with the tongue and with a blow, a bubble appears – like Brayden Stewart’s.

game day 3
PATRICK GREEN, TOO, knew just what to do.

game day 6
THE SECOND RELAY event had the contestants balance a penny on the top of their shoes or flip-flops, walk to a box – and flip the penny off their shoe into the box – without it falling off. (If it did fall off, it was back to the starting line.) Above, Kaila Blom completes her relay leg with a gymnast-style flip.

game day 7
TRYSTYN HARTWIG, LEFT, the penny visible on top of his right shoe, gets some encouragement and coaching wisdom from teammate Branden Hopper, left.

game day 8
WITH A PERFECTLY-timed twist of the hip, Chandler Phoulom is able to drop his penny into the box.

game day 9
THE FINAL RELAY event featured spoons – raw eggs – and a round trip out-and-back – plus a hand-off to the teammate next in line – without dropping the egg – splat. Concentration on this effort is etched on the face of Ethan Dunn. Behind, Tristyn Hartwig observes the action.

game day 10
CALEB KLASSEN MOVES swiftly across the grass, balancing his egg in the spoon.

game day 12
IT WAS A smooth hand-off from Alex Blom, right, to teammate Tito Sayachack, left. Watching the precision exchange is Chandler Phoulom, center. At back is Patrick Green.

game day 13
ABRIANA GARCIA CAREFULLY carries her egg one-foot-in-front-of-the-other in a straight line, as if she was walking on a tightrope. At back, Ethan Dunn approves of her egg-carrying style.

game day 14
FOLLOWING THE RELAY races, the young readers of the 2015 Summer Reading Program – “Reading with the Rhythm” – headed inside to play some Bingo for prizes, and a few sweet candy treats. Alana Morey, left and Brody Kleven, right, reach across one-another to claim their favorites.

game day 15
HEAD LIBRARIAN CAROL Lehman lays out the eclectic array of Bingo prizes. They included earth kickballs, double wildfliers, frisbees, lanyards, rings, jigsaw puzzles, folders with a ruler and pencil, inflatable guitars, LED flashing guitar pins, LED-lit wristbands, billfolds and bags, totes and backpacks.

game day 17
BINGO CALLER WAS Library Assistant Sandy Schroeder. Winning Bingos015 Su5  were horizontal, vertical, diagonal – and all four corners.

CARSEN HOPPER FOCUSES his attention like a laser on his Bingo card.

JULIE VILAIPHONE HAS quite a few numbers covered – but her face tells the story that the last number called was not one she particularly liked.
