She passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at The Good Samaritan Society of Mountain Lake-The Village.

Evelyn Mae Kirkman was born on April 28, 1930, in Kimball Township, Jackson County, Minnesota, the daughter of the late Donald A. and Winifred Ruth (Gravley) Olson. She attended country school District #68 in her early years and then high school in Spencer, Iowa and Royal, Iowa; graduating with the Class of 1947.

She worked for Dr. Harvey Basinger at the Mountain Lake Hospital from 1947-1948.

On February 14, 1948, Evelyn was united in marriage to Leslie Kirkman at the home of Reverend A.L. Seamons. This union was blessed with one son and three daughters.

In 1952, Evelyn and Leslie were saved and baptized at the Jeffers Baptist Church in rural Jeffers and became members of the church at that time. She took much pride in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; seeing them often and not missing many of their church, school or sporting events. The couple were also foster parents for many years.

For 21 years, Evelyn worked at the Sogge Good Samaritan Society in Windom, and then at the Windom Area Hospital for many years. She enjoyed obstetrics and general duty. Her love for older adults brought her into many homes in Cottonwood, Nobles and Jackson Counties through the public nursing program. In her later years, Evelyn worked in Windom, Jeffers, Mountain Lake and Westbrook, caring for the elderly in their homes. Nursing was always a great part of her life, along with taking care of others in her home.

In October 2013, Evelyn became a resident of The Village.

Evelyn is survived by her husband, Leslie of Windom; two daughters, Debra (Roger) Huitt of Bloomington, Minnesota and Cindi (Ken) Simon of Comfrey, Minnesota; foster children, Eldon Smith of Oklahoma and his son, Steve, Dan Smith of Oklahoma and Judy (Keith) Rasche of Norwood, Minnesota and her children, Shane, Amber and Kelsey; grandchildren, Greg Huitt and his son, Dylan, Megan Huitt Benson and her children, Callie and Camron, Rebecca (Nicholas) Zuehlke and their children, Marisa, Bockton and Isla, Matt (Stacie) Simon and their children, Kennedie and Brent, Kory (Christa) Simon and their children, Caleb, Kaylee, Lacey and Landon and Jordan (Abby) Simon and their children, Ashlynn and Diezel and many relatives and friends

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son and daughter and one brother.
