Jerome “Jerry” Meyers passed away suddenly at his home in DeForest on Saturday, August 30, 2014.

Jerry was born on June 30, 1948 in St. James, Minnesota and grew up in nearby Odin, Minnesota. He attended Mankato State University and on April 2, 1977, married Ruth Anderson.

Jerry was the District Service Manager for the Hoover Company in Madison, Wisconsin from 1969 until he retired in 2003.

He was a talented softball pitcher, playing for the Odin hometown team as well as several Madison softball leagues.

Jerry was a skilled woodworker, meticulous in everything he made from cutting boards to plaques, from bowls to baseball bats.

He was a volunteer at the DeForest Area Senior Center delivering “Meals on Wheels” and also at the Habitat for Humanity Restore in Madison. Jerry was an all-around handyman who enjoyed using his talents to help others. Although he was a man of few words, when he said something, you knew it came from the heart and he meant it.

Jerry is survived by his wife Ruth, of DeForest; two daughters Signa Meyers and Kaella (Kevin Ploessl) Meyers and granddaughter Izzy Hagenow; his siblings Darryl (Lynn) Olson, Patricia Rettke, James (Barb) Meyers, Stan (Gloria) Meyers and Kyle (Liz) Meyers, as well as sisters and brothers-in-law, several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Vernon and Irene Meyers and his brother-in-law Dennis Rettke.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the DeForest Senior Center or the Newport Evangelical Lutheran Church will be appreciated.
