janice garmsFuneral services for 73-year-old Janice Garms of Windom, Minnesota will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday morning, July 3, 2014, at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom, located at 1157 3rd Avenue.

Visitation will be held at the church the day of the service from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

LaCanne Family Funeral Home of Windom is handling the arrangements.

Janice Garms passed away at the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom on Sunday, June 29, 2014.

Janice (Carlson) Garms was born on March 2, 1941, in Jackson, Minnesota, the daughter of the late Norville and Doris (Hansberger) Carlson and graduated from Jackson Public High School in 1959. She attended one year of nursing school at Lutheran Deaconess Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota and then went to LBI (Lutheran Bible Institute) and worked at Augustana Nursing Home in Minneapolis. She returned to Jackson and worked at the Jackson Sunset Home, later moving to Albert Lea, Minnesota, where she worked for one year before returning to work at the Jackson Sundet Home and later, the Jackson Hospital.

On October 1, 1966, Janice was united in marriage to LeRoy Garms at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Jackson. This union was blessed with two children, Glen and LeAnn. They also have been blessed with three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Adam and BreAnna. Jan also worked at Hammer’s New and Used in Windom for two years and in 1979, received her LPN (Licensed Practical Nursing) degree from Worthington Community College in Worthington, Minnesota. Her first job was at the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom and then the Jackson Municipal Hospital where she worked for 13 years. Janice then spent the next eight years employed at the Eventide Home in Mountain Lake until retiring.

In June 2014, due to Janice’s health, she moved into the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial where she was placed in hospice care.

Janice was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom and a former member of the Living Word Lutheran Church in Windom. She enjoyed walking, exercise, flowers, cooking, music, writing, watching the Minnesota Twins and traveling. She made some enjoyable trips to Branson and Missouri and other places.

Janice is survived by her husband of 47 years, LeRoy Garms of Windom; two children, Glen Garms of Windom and LeAnn (Jason) Mix of Welcome, Minnesota; three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Adam and BreAnna and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Diane Meyer and a brother, Stan Carlson.
