ODIN NATIVE BRUCE Laingen returned to Minnesota – and his hometown – over the past Fourth of July weekend. On Friday, July 4, he gathered with friends and family in Odin and on Sunday, July 6, he was honored at the Minnesota Twins/New York Yankees game at Target Field, receiving a POW (Prisoner of War) flag from Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire. Retired United States Ambassador Laingen was the most senior American official held hostage during the Iran hostage crisis, serving as the ChargĂ© d’affaires (head of diplomatic mission) at the United States Embassy in Tehran, Iran. Fifty-Two American diplomats and citizens were held hostage for 444 days (November 4, 1979, to January 20, 1981), after a group of Iranian students, belonging to the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam’s Line, who were supporting the Iranian Revolution took over the embassy. Above, Laingen receives the flag from Gardy. At left are his son, Chip and sister, Norma Marsh. As an aside, I am the proud holder of Laingen’s autograph, received in the old Odin Town Hall at his Welcome Home reception. (Photo courtesy of the Minnesota Twins)
