Orrin “Dully” Holmen was born on December 30, 1919, in Jackson County, Minnesota, the son of the late Severin and Signe (Engan) Holmen. He was baptized and confirmed at Hauges Lutheran Church in rural Jackson County and was educated at the Bergen school near where he grew up on the family farm. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1941 and was honorably discharged in 1943, returning to the family farm.

On January 17, 1945, Dully was united in marriage to Betty Hendricks and they had three sons, Tom, Roger and Scott. Dully farmed from 1943-1967 and worked during the winter months for Leen Construction. In 1968, Dully’s brothers, Seiford (Si) Holmen and Milo Holmen, along with Dully, bought out Leen, and started Holmen Construction, which they operated for many years. Dully and Betty were caretakers at the Riverview Apartments in Windom from 1979-1999 – and they officially retired at the age of 80.

Dully was a member of the American Lutheran Church (ALC) in Windom. He enjoyed sports and was catcher on the Bergen fast-pitch softball team in the ’50s and ’60s. He also enjoyed ping pong, bowling, being a member of the ALC dart ball team, fishing and golfing with friends and family, especially his grandchildren. The annual invitational golf tournament was something Dully looked forward to playing in every year with Tom, Roger and Scott. Spending weekday mornings at the Senior Center with Milo and friends was something he looked forward to every day. Dully loved music and sang with the Bergen octet, Men’s chorus and Gospelaires.

Dully is survived by two sons, Tom (Sandy) Holmen of Tempe, Ariona; Scott (Shelley) Holmen of Valparaiso, Indiana; daughter-in-law, Mary Holmen of Windom; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; longtime friend, Florence Hunter of Windom; brother, Milo (Corrine) Holmen of Windom; sister-in-law, Doris Holmen of Windom and several nieces and nephews.
