Full-court press against cancer

Annual ‘Coaches-Versus-Cancer’ Week culminates with myriad of events at girls, boys home basketball games

Coaches_vs_Cancer_logoThe fifth-annual participation of the Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverine girls and boys basketball teams  with Coaches-Versus-Cancer (which started nationally in 1993) events will be held Thursday, January 30 (girls basketball night) and Friday, January 31 (boys basketball night). The program is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. This now traditional winter sports season activity is held as part of a fund-raising effort in the fight to help eradicate cancer.

Those attending one or both of the game nights are asked to dress in pink to show support for the cause.

Each night, the coaching staff will “bottom out” their attire with sneakers.

Prior to the tip-off the games on Thursday and Friday, varsity players will distribute pink roses in honor of, or in memory or, someone whose life was affected by cancer.

Half-time entertainment on Thursday will be courtesy of the boys basketball team, and on Friday, members of the girls basketball team will return the favor.

Wall of Hope decals will be for sale in the foyer of the auditorium, with a cost of $1 per decal. As well, these decals will honor or memorialize someone whom cancer has affected.

Raffles tickets for items awarded each night will also be sold in the auditorium foyer for $1 per chance.

Some of the raffle prizes include:

*Family membership to Mountain Lake Family Fitness (Valued at $689.37)

*Visa gift cards from Triumph State Bank in Darfur and United Prairie Bank in Mountain Lake

*$50 gift cards to Casey’s

Special fund-raising meals will also be served each night in the public school cafeteria.

On Thursday, January 30, the Wolverine Booster Club will dish up an egg roll/crab rangoon meal, with serving from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Mountain Lake Firefighters will host an all-you-can-eat pancake supper on Friday, January 31, with meal time serving from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Cost is $6 for adults and for children age 10 and under, $4.

Preceding the two game days of activities will be “Suits-N-Sneakers Week,” running from Monday, January 27 through Friday, January 31. Throughout the week, faculty and staff at both Mountain Lake Public and Mountain Lake Christian can “buy” their way to comfort by donating $15 per staff member (which goes directly to the American Cancer Society) – and secures them the right to dress in jeans and sneakers the entire week.
