Despite valiant effort, season ends for MLA girls

Lose in Section 2A South semis; their foe GHECT now to face Mankato Loyola

It was a valiant effort by the #6 Section 2A South seed Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Varsity Wolverines Girls Basketball team when they faced the Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman (GHECT), but GHECT went on to defeat MLA by 23, 63 to 40. The two squads squared-off in the second game of the night at Lake Crystal/Wellcome Memorial High School in Lake Crystal on Thursday night, March 3.

The strong inside game of GHECT’s pair of six-foot players, teamed with good outside shooting, proved why the team was given its #2 South seeding. At the half, GHECT had claimed a 10-point margin at the half at 29 to 19.

Prolific scorer senior guard Signey Stoesz ended the night with 22 points. She closes her career as a Wolverine with over 1,000 points. Junior guard Brook Sunderman added nine points for MLA.

The Wolverines of Head Coach Wayne Klassen finish the season with a record of 15-9.

GHECT will now take on the #1 seed in the South, Mankato Loyola, in the South championship on Monday, March 7 at 8 p.m., at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. Loyola defeated #4 St. Clair by nine in the first game of the night at Lake Crystal, 49 to 40.

In Section 2A North, the #1 seed, Sleepy Eye Public, will take on the #2-seed, Cedar Mountain/Comfrey (CMC) in the 6 p.m. game at Gustavus on Monday. Sleepy Eye topped #4 Bird Island-Lake Lillian-Olivia-Danube, 59 to 30. CMC defeated Nicollet, the North’s #3-seed, 75 to 52.

South versus North – in order to see who will represent Section 2A in the Minnesota State High School League’s Class A Tourney – will be at the Taylor Center on the campus of Minnesota State University-Mankato, on Friday, March 11; tip-off at 6 p.m.
