Postponed girls/boys doubleheader hit the hardcourt Monday night
THE WOLVERINE GIRLS and boys doubleheader basketball games against the Windom Eagles were postponed due to winter weather conditions, and while the rescheduled games were played at Mountain Lake on Monday, January 11, southwest Minnesota weather again played a role. Some fresh snow on top of already-fallen deep snow depths, with added wicked wind gusts creating blowing low (and at times – no) visibility conditions and teeth-chattering wind chills, kept the guests at the local gym until driving conditions were deemed safe enough for careful travel back to Windom on Minnesota State Highway #60. (Both schools decided Monday night to start school two-hours late on Tuesday.) Meanwhile, both games played were well worth the price of admission. In the Mountain Lake Area (MLA) girls contest, the Wolverines eked out a two-point, 43-41, non-conference victory. At the half, the MLA squad held a ten-point lead, 28 to 18. While the Eagles battled back in the second half – outscoring MLA 19-9 to tie the game at 37 – even taking the lead (39-37) for a time – the Wolverines did not fold. MLA senior Signey Stoesz hit a three-pointer with time running out in the game, was fouled on the play and nailed that free throw to give the squad a 41-39 lead. The Wolverines held a 43-41 margin with just 9.4 ticks on the clock. The Eagles had the ball for a final shot, but the MLA defense did not allow that to happen. Stoesz tallied 26 points on the night, adding 10 rebounds. Her sophomore sister Marta Stoesz chipped in eight points. Madison Maras led Windom scorers with 20 points. Head Coach Wayne Klassen’s squad is now 7-3 overall – and 4-1 in Red Rock Conference play. Next up for the girls is a girls/boys doubleheader against Southwest Minnesota Christian of Edgerton on “Coaches vs. Cancer” game day this Friday, January 15.
