Sunday’s speech treat was sweet

Annual event featured MLC Speech Team member presentations

The Mountain Lake Christian (MLC) Speech Team hosted their annual “Speech is a Sweet Treat” event this past Sunday afternoon, March 1, in the school’s newly-completed music room.

All six team members presented their competition pieces for the 2015 speech season – and also served up an ice cream sundae and ice cream float buffet.

Participating “Speechies” included:

* Senior Elijah Stoesz – Informative Speaking and Original Oratory.

* Senior Caitlyn Smith – Serious Poetry and Great Speeches.

* Junior Melissa Lohrenz – Original Oratory and Serious Poetry.

* Junior Josh Raabe – Humorous Interpretation.

* Sophomore Danica Dick – Storytelling.

* Sophomore Katelyn Fast – Serious Prose.

The team is coached by Kim Friesen.

Current team sponsors include Friesen Financial of Windom, Paul’s Food Pride of St. James, Lohrenz Construction of Mountain Lake, KBQ of Mountain Lake, Town’s Edge Auto of Mountain Lake and Grandpa and Grandma Van Duyn of South Dakota.

ABOVE, ELIJAH STOESZ shares his Informative Speaking presentation on non-verbal communication, “More Than a Blink and a Nod.” In Informative Speaking, the speaker utilizes information boards. Stoesz also competes in Original Oratory with his own, “Intelligent Texting.”

MELISSA LOHRENZ DOUBLE-enters in two categories at speech meets. she presents her Original Oratory, “Crackin’ the Whip on EBT Abuse,” as well as the Serious Poetry selection – which the camera catches her performing – “A Program About Aging.”

JOSH RAABE OF a thousand faces competes in the category of Humorous Interpretation. This season’s cutting is from a Dave Barry piece, “The Hot Seat,” in which Barry explains how it came to pass that he set his toilet on fire.

DANICA DICK REACTS with expansive facial expression and arm movements as she tells the story of “The Happy Man’s Shirt,” an Italian tale of a king and his unhappy son. Dick competes in the category of Storytelling. Competitors prepare 15 stories for the season, and for each round of a speech meet, draw a selection blindly from the complete list which designates which story they will present.

KATELYN FAST PRESENTS her Serious Prose presentation, “Soul Surfer,’ that tells the story of Bethany Hamilton, a natural talent in the sport of surfing, who loses an arm in a shark attack as a teenager.
