Third, fourth quarter play crucial to boys basketball win at Loyola

Wolverine offense scores 40, defense holds Crusaders to 18 in second half

 

THE MOUNTAIN LAKE Area (MLA) Wolverine boys basketball squad, under Head Coach Shawn Naas, played a rare Saturday afternoon game yesterday (December 9), when they journeyed to Mankato to take on the Loyola Crusaders. After the first half, the Maroon-and-Silver found themselves at the losing end of a 36-41 contest. In the second half’s 16 minutes of play, however, the MLA offense scored 40, while the defense held their hosts to just 18 points. Senior Marcus Boyd and sophomore Abraham Stoesz were scoring leaders, each hitting for 18 points. Two more from MLA also hit double figures, junior David Larson for 11 and senior Weston Osland with 10. Junior Spencer Khamvongsa scored seven. Rounding out Wolverine scoring were Sam Paulson and Drake Harder, each with four and Regan Syverson and Brodie Freeman with a deuce apiece. MLA hit for 48% from the field (22-of-60), including 9-of-21 from three-point land (42%). At the free throw line, shooters were good on 9-of-17 attempts for 52% accuracy. Under the basket, the Wolverines nabbed 38 total rebounds, 12 on offense and 26 on defense. Harder and Paulson each had nine grabs, with Larson takin gdown five. Boyd, Stoesz and Khamvongsa each had four. Boyd had five of MLA’s 18 assists, with Stoesz tossing in four. Paulson and Harder accounted for seven of the team’s eight blocks, Paulson with four and Harder with a trio. MLA also had 13 turnovers. On Tuesday, December 12, the club returns home to take on conference opponent, Fulda.
