MLA Wolverine boys, girls cross country do the Turkey Trot

Runck second in boys 5K; Butterfield-Odin’s Lukas Pierson is first

 

 

Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverine boys cross country’s Nathan Runck – currently ranked 15th in Minnesota State Class A – finished second at the 50th annual 5000-meter Turkey Trot high school cross country meet, held at the former Prairie View Golf Links near Worthington.

Runck, a senior, hit the chute in under 17 minutes at 16:53.1, behind the first-place runner Lukas Pierson of Butterfield-Odin Public High School, another senior, who runs with the St. James Area Saints. Pierson – who is ranked ninth in Class A – topped the field of 162 runners with a time of 16:26.9.

MLA junior Dalton Piotter finished ninth with 17:42.7. Another Wolverine junior, Ryan Blomgren ran the course in under 18 minutes at 17:57.5, ending in 12th.

In the team scoring, St. James (1-4-8-10-13) tallied a winning point total of 36, while home Worthington (5-7-12-20-26) edged MLA (2-9-11-23-30) for second, 70-75.

Fairmont was fourth in the boys’ standings with 86 points, followed by Martin County West (104), Murray County Central/Fulda (150), Windom Area (205), Pipestone Area (216), Heron Lake-Okabena (275), Jackson County Central (284) and Southwest Minnesota Christian (319). Adrian and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton were both incomplete.

Another MLA runner finishing among the top 25 was sophomore Emilio Garcia de la Cruz, who was 24th with a time if 18:29.3.

The finishes for the remaining field of Wolverine varsity runners was as follows:

  • Josiah Gardiner – 34th, 18:57.
  • Emmanuel Fentanez – 39th, 19:10.
  • Seth Klassen – 91st, 21:05.
  • Bubba Xayachak – 98th, 21:29.
  • Logan Pankonin – 114th, 22:21.
  • Brandon Louangsaphakdy – 134th, 23:54.
  • Paxton Morin – 138th, 24:13.

Fairmont, the defending Class A girls’ state champions, won their fourth straight Turkey Trot team title, the trio of Martin County West freshman Marissa Whitehead, Murray County Central/Fulda freshman Morgan Gehl and Fairmont senior Iliana Ramon running far ahead of the 114 finishers in the varsity girls’ race.

MLA’s Kate Janzen stepped up for her first varsity race of the season and was the first Wolverine girl into the chute. She finished the 5K in 48th with a time of 25:16.

Remaining Maroon-and-Silver girls race results were as follows:

  • Anika Fast – 58th, 25:59.
  • Sara Quiring – 64th, 26:22.
  • Chloe Klassen – 68th, 26:42.
  • Aura Spry – 73rd, 27:51.
  • Alina Inthamthivath – 80th, 28:13.
  • Jordan Wright – 84th, 28:52.
  • Summer Janzen – 85th, 28:59.
  • Jorja Lepp – 95th, 29:45.
  • Emma Stade – 110th, 35:50.
  • Amy Bartsch – 114th, 40:40.

Fairmont’s winning score was 37 on team places 3-4-6-9-15. Martin County West was a distant second with 112 points, followed by Pipestone Area (122), Murray County Central/Fulda (134), Worthington (147), Heron Lake-Okabena (171), Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (175), Southwest Minnesota Christian (184), St. James Area (200), Adrian (216), Jackson County Central (226) and Mountain Lake Area (259), while Windom Area was incomplete.

Stated Head Coach Kyle Blomgren on the girls and boys run results, “We saw four career or season PRs (personal records) reached in the girls race. Kate Janzen looked solid in her first varsity race of the season. Alina Inthamthirath is also showing steady inprovement. Our boys finished in third place, narrowing the margin with Worthington. We had all five of our scorers under 19 minutes – and one more just over. The boys had four career and three season PRs run.  We are in a very busy portion of our schedule, so the hard work put in will give the runners lots of opportunity to show what they can do on the race course.”

The Wolverines will next run Monday, September 18, at Windom, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

MLA’s Saengosoth wins junior high girls race

MLA’s Mercedes Saengosoth clocked a winning time of 7:39.4 in the girls’ 1,800-meter junior high race, while Tracy-Milroy-Balaton’s Jordan Munson (7:52.6) was second.

Murray County Central/Fulda won the girls’ team title with a low tally of 33 points, while MLA was second with a score of 41 and Fairmont finished third with 49 points.

Wolverine runners in the top 10 of the boys’ 1,800-meter were Drayton Klassen (fourth, 7:08.5) and Caden Swoboda (seventh, 7:17.8).

MLA won the junior high boys’ team title with 54 points, followed in close fashion by Windom (80), Murray County Central/Fulda (80), Pipestone Area (81), Martin County West (82) and Worthington (102).
