Wyona ‘Sis’ Yackel

Funeral services for 89-year-old Wyona Yackel of St. James, Minnesota, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday morning, June 19, 2017, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. James with Reverend Martin Lopahs officiating. The church is located at 315 9th Street South.

Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, located south of St. James on Watonwan County Road #27.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 18, 2017, at Sturm Funeral Home-St. James Chapel, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The funeral home is located at 906 10th Avenue South. A second visitation will be held at the church the day of the service from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Wyona Yackel passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Mayo Clinic Health System-St. James.

Wyona “Sis” Cordina Aden Yackel was born July 28, 1927 in Mountain Lake, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Margaret (Menssen) Aden. She lived in Cottonwood County for eight years before moving to Watonwan County for six years. They moved to St. James where she went to St. Paul’s Lutheran School and graduated from the eighth grade. She was baptized August 27, 1927 in Mountain Lake and confirmed on June 14, 1942 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in St. James.

Wyona married Merlyn Yackel on June 29, 1947 at St. Paul’s, where she was a lifelong member and active in the choir. She worked at Watonwan Memorial Hospital of St. James in housekeeping for many years. She was a lifetime member of the St. James VFW Auxiliary.

Wyona moved into Brandt Ridge in St. James on June 20, 2012. She enjoyed their entertainment, playing Bingo, crafts and going out to eat. Sis never missed a Minnesota Twins baseball game. She enjoyed her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren every time they came home to visit.

Wyona is survived by her daughters, JoAnn (Eldon) Janzen of Butterfield, Minnesota and Carol (Scott) Melick of New Ulm; grandchildren, Jeanna, Chad, Sara, Mandy, Stephanie and Tim; great-grandchildren, Evan, Dylan, Katelyn, Noah, Lucas, Aaron, Nicholas, Natalie, Doni and Lita and brother-in-law, Eugene Yackel of Naples, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Merlyn; son, Terry; grandson, Matthew; great-grandson, Jonathan and all her brothers and sisters.
