There was something for everyone

Sweet Pow Wow Sunday, June 18 activities provided something for everyone to do, watch, eat – enjoy.

Events on the day included:

+ Center Point Church of Mountain Lake Pancake Breakfast in the Mountain Lake City Park Gazebo.

+ Mountain Lake Ministerial Association Community Worship Service at the Mountain Lake City Park Bandstand.

+ Food Stands opened.

+ First Annual Mountain Lake Vendor/Craft Fair in the Our Hometown Café parking lot.

+ Steve Pfeiffer Memorial 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament at Mountain Lake City Park.

+ 44th annual Mountain Lake Pow Wow Road Race. The races included:

  • Mountain Lake Pow Wow Road Race Fitness One- and Two-Mile Walks.
  • Half-Mile Runs for Kids.
  • Mountain Lake Mile Run.
  • Mountain Lake Four-Mile Run.

+ Antique, Classic, Hot Rod Car & Tractor Parade and Park-N-Show down 3rd Avenue.

+ Mountain Lake Ministerial Association-sponsored event concert by the group New City from Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa at the Mountain Lake City Park Bandstand.

RO MORIN AS chief pancake flipper for the Center Point Church of Mountain Lake Pancake Breakfast held this morning in the Mountain Lake City Park Gazebo. 

 

ASSISTING GRANDPA RO – as well as Center Point Church – in serving up the pancakes was Azely Rautenberg.

 

BRANDON JUNKER WAS set to enjoy his first forkful of pancake.

 

SWEET DENNELLA BENT savored the equally sweet maple syrup topping for her pancakes.

 

A FIRST ANNUAL Mountain Lake Vendor/Craft Fair was held in the Our Hometown Café parking lot. Offering up Usborne books (and her own handcrafted stained glass art work) was Alison Kounlabout.

 

HANA BERGLING, LEFT, and her grandma, Sharon Bergling, right, check out the metal art work of Gary and Greg Lingbeek of Lingbeek Designs of St. James – especially the unique “tattered-look” American flag.

 

LULAROE GOT A look-see from Cyndi Boldt, left. Bobbi Jo Otte of Danube, right, a LulaRoe Independent Fashion Consultant, approved of Cyndi’s fashion selection.

ELIZABETH LINSCHEID, LEFT, STRETCHED out as far as she could in order to prevent the ball handler to get to the basket.

 

AIDAN OLSON, LEFT and Sawyer Carrison, right, tangled while scrambling to get control of the basketball.

 

MIKKALA HUP WATCHED the eyes of the opposing ball handler in order to get a clue as to which way the offense was going to set up the play.

 

TRAVIS WILLABY, RIGHT, used the street ball pick of Weston Osland, left, to get their team’s offense on the move.

 

SANDY SCHROEDER, LEFT, and her daughter, Mindy Bakker, paced a trail of Fitness Walk participants hoofing behind them. For Sandy, and her husband, Steve, the day was extra special as the couple celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary – made complete with commemorative T-shirts emblazoned with their photo circa 1977.

 

THE 2017 MISS Mountain Lake royalty also pounded the pavement in the Fitness Walk. From left, Second Runner-Up Madison Schroeder, First Runner-Up Jordan Boldt and Miss Mountain Lake Jae Faber.

 

KEYMONI BENT RACED to first in the Kids Half Mile Run for ages nine and younger with a time of 2:50.8. Behind are Kelby Janzen, left and Julia Brinkman, right, the first girls into the chute for race. Julia was first in with 2:57.0 –  fourth overall – with Kelby right behind, 5th overall with a time of 2:58.5.

 

THE TOP RUNNERS were still tight two-thirds of the way through the Kids Half Mile for ages 10-12. Zach Klassen of Mountain Lake, #354, at center, had the kick at the finish to top the field with a time of 2:51.4. At left, Montgumery Byam of Mountain Lake ended in sixth with a time of 3:08.9, while John Boelke of St. James finished in with a time of 2:56.1. Running behind Boelke was Butterfield’s Ryan Pierson, who finished in fourth with 2:58.4. At right, Layne Wall was third with 2:56.9, while Preston Xayachak ended in eighth with a time of 3:12.7. Pacing behind Klassen was Noah Holmberg, who was fifth with 3:07.0. The first girl to finish was Alexandria Engebretson of Sherburn, running to a time of 3:10.5, good for seventh overall.

 

BUTTERFIELD’S SETH PIERSON was the 2017 winner of the Mountain Lake Mile, in at 4:39.5.

 

CLOSE AS YOU can get – hitting the chute in the Mountain Lake Mile with the same time – 6:27.4. Liana Blomgren of Butterfield, left was the first female in the mile, finishing 20th overall. Carmen Syverson of Mountani Lake, right, was the second female in, finishing in 21st overall.

 

A PACK OF runners were on the run close together as they neared the final 200 meters of the Mountain Lake Mile.

 

THE BULLHORN SIREN gave the signal – and the Four-Mile Run was underway.

 

MOUNTAIN LAKE NATIVE Tim Harder of Somerset, Massachussetts was the first to finish the Mountain Lake Four-Mile. Harder’s time was 20:20.7. There were 97 runners at the start, with 94 finishing.

 

SIERRA (HARDER) TABBERT of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, formerly of Mountain Lake, was the second female in on the Four-Mile. Tabbert finished 15th overall with a time of 25:18.7. The first female finisher was Minnetonka’s Sara Tan, with a time of 24:58.3, good for 12th overall.

 

ODIN’S ART AND Bev Carlson came to town with their 1955 Buick Special to take part in the Sunday evening Antique, Classic, Hot Rod Car & Tractor Parade.

 

TROY KLASSEN WAS in the catbird – or tractor – of this Allis-Chalmers D-14.

 

STEVE AND MARY Klassen took this Pontiac Trans Am down 3rd Avenue – with family members along for the ride.

 

THERE WAS A beehive of activity around this Antique, Classic, Hot Rod Car & Tractor Parade participant during the Park-N-Show. Indeed, the car folks were “buzzing” around Matt Johnson and his 1968 Dodge Super Bee.

 

THE MOUNTAIN LAKE Ministerial Association sponsored the band, New City from Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, for their Sunday Night Pow Wow special event on the Mountain Lake City Park Bandstand. New City is the Dordt College Travelling Summer worship team. Group members hail from Iowa, South Korea and Brazil.

+ After the Grande Parade – Summerline Groove (a percussion academy located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota) and The Wendinger Band erform at the Mountain Lake City Park Band Shelter.

Tuesday, June 20

+ Kids Medallion Hunt in Mountain Lake City Park, at Poet Corn Wagon 11 a.m., for kids age 10 and under.

+ Food/Commercial Stands, Midway (Midwest Rides) and Rush Adventures Bungee Trampoline open in Mountain Lake City Park, 11 a.m.

+ Free Midway (Midwest Rides) Ticket Drawing – for kids ages 10 and under, every half-hour from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. (must be present to win).

+ Mountain Lake Area Booster Club Dunk Tank in Mountain Lake City Park, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

+ Kids Pedal Tractor Pull – down 10th Street, 3 p.m.

+ Georgia’s Dance Elements performance – Mountain Lake City Park Band Shelter, 5 p.m.

+ Mountain Lake Fire Department Water Fight – on 10th Street, 5:30 p.m.

+ Bob & The Beachcombers – Mountain Lake City Park Band Shelter, 7:30 p.m.-9 p.m.

+ Raffle Drawing for $1,000 grand prize, two $500 cash prizes and other prizes donated by local businesses –  Mountain Lake City Park Bandstand, 9:30 p.m.
