Pow Wow’s Monday, Monday – so good to ‘we’

Park – to parade – and back again – it was all we hoped it would be

Playing off the lyrics to The Mamas & The Papas hit song, “Monday Monday,” Pow Wow’s Monday, Monday was so good to “we.” In fact, moving from Mountain Lake City Park – to the Grande Parade – and back again, it was all we hoped it would be.

Monday’s event rundown was as follows:

+ Food Stands in Mountain Lake City Park fed the hungry multitudes.

+ Commercial Stands in Mountain Lake City Park tended to consumers’ needs.

+ Midway (Midwest Rides) were rolling, spinning, bouncing and flying in Mountain Lake City Park.

+ Grande Parade made its way down the traditional one-mile 3rd Avenue route.

+ Groove Inc., a percussion academy located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and The Wendinger Band performed at the Mountain Lake City Park Bandstand after taking part in the parade.

Below is a Pow Wow Monday photo gallery:

KARLA ERTZ OF Mountain Lake was the discoverer of the Pow Wow Medallion in the annual Adult Scavenger Hunt. Using the first clue given, Ertz found the medallion in the telephone booth adjacent to Frontier Telephone on Friday night following the queen pageant. For her successful detective work, Ertz received $100 from the Mountain Lake Area Chamber of Commerce when she turned in thte medallion on Monday. (Photo courtesy of Michelle Perez)

POW WOW #83 is the final one for Mountain Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Secretary Marva Ott. Ott will be retiring from the post at the end of this month. But, for now, she continued to encourage Pow Wow attendees to purchase a Pow Wow ticket – or five. There is still time to get tickets in order to have a shot at winning the $1,000 grand prize, the two $500 second-prizes, or any of the other prizes from Mountain Lake businesses to be raffled off. The drawing will begin at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, at the Mountain Lake City Park Grandstand.

MIKAYA SCHROEDER OF Mountain Lake, left, took her Arizona cousin, Carter Tews, right, for a spin on the race car ride at Pow Wow. Fortunately each young driver had their own steering wheel.

BUSINESS WAS BRISK at the Trinity Lutheran Church’s Cultural Outreach homemade egg roll booth. Above, Kathy Svalland added another batch of frozen egg rolls into the hot oil to fry.

BRIAN SCHULTZ, LEFT, on counter duty, gathered another egg roll order from Kermit Leet, right. In fact, the 5,500 egg rolls made were sold out by 9 p.m. on Monday night.

MONDAY AFTERNOON CALLER at the Mountain Lake Lions Bingo Booth was Dave Jungas.

“I SCREAM. You scream. We all scream for ice cream!” There was no better spot for folks to scream for that ice cream than at the American Dairy Association’s trailer. Jim Dick, above, was kept busy dishing up servings.

DRAKE HARDER, RIGHT, under the watchful eye of Kjell Eken, center, was flipping burgers Monday noon at the Mountain Lake Public High School’s Food Stand.

POW WOW PUPS are an elevated version of ordinary corn dogs. Dipping the hot dog-on-a-stick into the Mountain Lake Area Scholarship’s “secret formula” batter was Sam Grev.

FOLLOWING A DIP in some hot oil, the golden brown Pow Wow Pup was set to be delivered, courtesy of Amber Hughes, at the fryer, right and Jaden Hoek, working customer service, left.

DAD AND DAUGHTER enjoyed an impromptu picnic of “park food” on the benches in front of the Mountain Lake City Park Bandstand. Spending lunchtime together were Emma Klassen, left, and her dad, Troy Klassen, right.

MOM MARISOL CAMPOS, left, takes a turn at making some “music” on the toy horn of her son, Damian Campos, to the young boy’s delight.

PRESENTING THE COLORS at the opening of the Monday Night Grande Parade was Janessa Peters. Parade coordinators were Emily Bentson, DeeDee Oddson and Cahty Vonk.

MEMBERS OF MOUNTAIN Lake American Legion Post #389 took part in the parade, and were saluted by the crowd for their service. Front, from left, Dean Schied, Jerry Logue and Bruce Falk. Back, Eldean Ratzlaff, left and Jim Crawford, right.

GRAND MARSHALS FOR the 2017 Parade were, at back, Steve Harder, left and Judy Harder, right. The Harders traveled down the parade route in the traditional ride for Grand Marshals – Gene Friesen’s classic Mustang convertible – with Gene, himself, front left, at the wheel.

TREY HOPWOOD, A member of Mountain Lake Fire & Rescue, tossed out a handful of candy to parade-watchers.

MOUNTAIN LAKE FIREFIGHTER Dave Watkins, left, made the candy toss more personal, getting down low to share a handful of Tootsie Rolls with Charlie Fast, right.

THE MOUNTAIN LAKE Public High School (MLHS) Marching Band under the direction of Kurt Jahnke.

MLHS MARCHING BAND percussionist Ethan Klassen just wants to bang on the drum all day.

MEMBERS OF THE Mountain Lake Christian Trash Can Band performed a fine tune with a metal beat emphasis. The group was led by Aaron Petersen.

TAKING TO 3RD Avenue to do some group motorcycle moves were members of the El Riad Shrine Motor Corps. This parade performance was sponsored by the Freedom Riders Motorcycle Club.

PERCUSSION. PASSION. PERFECTION. These three “P”s aptly describe what Groove Inc., a Sioux Falls, South Dakota drum line, is all about.

A CONTINGENT OF Laos American Veterans marched to present their story of service to country.

TRADITIONAL LAOTIAN DRESS, music and dance were demonstrated by members of the Cross-Cultural Outreach Committee of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mountain Lake.
