Nineteen-year-old arrested in St. James assault case

Pascual Sanchez beaten in his yard on Monday

A 19-year-old St. James man, Jesus Daniel Ibarra, was arrested at around 3 p.m. yesterday (Wednesday, June 28), in connection with a Monday, June 26 assault that left 80-year-old Pascual Sanchez of St. James hospitalized.

Ibarra is in custody at the Watonwan County Jail on a requested charge of first-degree assault. He will make his first court appearance tomorrow (Friday, June 30).

Sanchez has been hospitalized in North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale after the assault near his home.

St. James Police Department Officers responded just before 1 p.m. on Monday to a location at 11th Street South and 2nd Avenue South in St. James on a report of a fight between two men.

At that time, Sanchez told police that a younger Hispanic male wearing a red shirt and blue jeans walked by his property. Sanchez was outside in the yard and exchanged words with the suspect. The suspect continued to walk west, before walking back past Sanchez’s property a short time later. That’s when police say the suspect assaulted Sanchez and fled.

Sanchez was taken by ambulance to Mayo Health System-St. James, and later airlifted to North Memorial with injuries.

According to a GoFundMe page set up by his family, Sanchez suffered a broken nose that htswill require surgery, a broken left wrist and a brain bleed.
