MLA-C bows out of Section 2A fastpitch tourney

Lose to Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s, Nicollet

 

 

The Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (MLA-C) girls softball squad went into today’s (Saturday, May 27) double-elimination Section 2A fastpitch semi-finals at Caswell Park in North Mankato undefeated, but dropped a pair of games to bow out of the tourney.

Knights grab early lead to defeat Wolverines 6-0

In this morning’s game against Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s, the Knights scored four in the bottom half of the second to claim an early lead over the Wolverines. They tacked on singles in their half of the fourth and the sixth to claim the shutout win. Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s had 10 hits on the game; the Wolverines, two.

Molly Carnell was the pitcher for MLA-C, nailing five “K”s, and 24 first-pitch strikes. She had a 1.67 WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched).

Although Wolverine bats could not bring home any runs, both Margo Stoesz and Rylie Tollefson did advance runners, each with a pair of Quality At Bats (QABs).

Wolverines fall to Nicollet in walk-off, 5-4

This afternoon, MLA-C and Nicollet went into extra innings to have the Raiders break a 4-4 tie, and win in a walk-off in the bottom half of the eighth inning, 5-4.

After one inning of play, MLA-C was down one run to Nicollet, 2-1. The Wolverines scored two in the top half of the fourth to claim their own one-run lead, 3-2. The Raiders came back with two in their bottom half of the fifth, and led the Wolverines 4-3. MLA-C scored a run in the top half of the sixth to knot up the game at four runs apiece.

On the game, MLA-C scattered seven hits, and Nicollet, 13. However, the Wolverines also had seven errors, with only a pair for the Raiders.

Molly Carnell pitched all the way, claiming two strike-outs and 35 first-pitch strikes. Her WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) was 1.70.

Carnell also had three hits, scoring one. Destiny Sybounheuan knocked out a pair of hits, talling one RBI.

Sybounheuan productivity at the plate had her compiling five Quality at Bats (QABs), with Margo Stoesz active for three.

The team’s head coach is Brian Hopwood, with Shawn Naas as assistant coach.
