Stuck in a ‘sticky wicket’

MLC PreK-Grade 8 Principal Kim Friesen duct-taped to wall, left hanging (a few minutes) as MLC fruit fundraiser exceeds goal

Mountain Lake Christian (MLC) PreK-Grade 8 Principal (and high school language arts teacher) Kim Friesen found herself stuck in a “sticky wicket” this afternoon (Tuesday, March 7).

A “sticky wicket” is a metaphor, based on tough going in playing the sport of cricket, used to described a difficult circumstance, and indeed, being duct-taped to a gym wall – and left hanging (if only for a few minutes) – is clearly a diffficult circumstance.

Friesen had challenged the MLC students using this adhesive activity as an incentive for the school’s annual fruit sales. It worked well, with 460 boxes of fruit sold, raising approximately $10,000 for the school. The top three fruit sellers, in order, included Abi Renteria-Rojas, Jaeylen Melson and Audrey Dick. The sixth-grade was the top-selling class, and will receive a pizza party.

Following is a photo gallery of the activity – which featured a “captive” participant – on top of a captive audience:

A TRIO, INCLUDING a pair of MLC staff members, begin the strategic taping process. As Kim Friesen, center, nervously prepares for the consequences of her challenge to students, Nikki Petersen, kneeling at left, coordinator of the fruit box sales, and at right, Gail Pearson MLC High School math teacher, back and Nicole Meyer, elementary and high school physical education teacher, elementary keyboarding instructor and high school electives coordinator, front, apply an inaugural layer of the traditional gray duct tape.

PEARSON, LEFT and Meyer, right, are joined by K-12 music teacher Aaron Petersen, kneeling at center, the three having a bit too much fun applying the duct time, it seems. Added into the design, a selection of patterned cut tape lengths. And . . . fortunately, for historians . . . the entire event is caught on video.

STUDENTS AND STAFF also were able to add their own strip of duct tape into the mix.

KIM FRIESENS – ALL taped up – and nowhere to go.

AFTER MLC ADMINISTRATOR Dr. Mike James removed the foot stool, Friesen is left to just hang out. She is joined by the three top fruit salespeople. Top seller was Abi Renteria-Rojas, at right. Second highest seller was Jaeylen Melson, second from left, with Audrey Dick, third highest fruit box seller, at left.
