Lois Sawatzky

Funeral services for 91-year-old Lois Sawatzky of St. James, Minnesota, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. James, with Reverend Martin Lopahs officiating. The church is located at 315 9th Street South.

Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in rural St. James, located south of the city on Watonwan County Road 27.

Visitation will be Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The funeral home is located at 906 10th Avenue South. A second visitation will be from at the church the day of services from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Lois Sawatzky passed away on Friday, March 10, 2017 at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Society in St. James.

Lois Elaine Hinrichs was born on September 27, 1925, the daughter of Ubbe and Julia (Lunz) Hinrichs. She was a lifelong resident of St. James and graduated from St. James High School in 1943. After high school, she worked at the Butterfield bank as a teller and bookkeeper.

She was united in marriage to Paul Sawatzky on June 7, 1946. She and Paul farmed for many years in Nelson Township of Watonwan County.

Lois was a member of the Blue Ribbon 4-H club in her youth and was active with
her children in the Golden Gleaners 4-H Club. She also enjoyed sewing, oil painting, ceramics, fishing, golfing, bowling and dancing. She was active in  St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Extension Club 28, the Lois Club and many other local groups over the years.

She is survived by her children, Patricia (Charles) Holte of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Richard (Sandra) Sawatzky of North Mankato, Minnesota, Peggy (Patrick) Warner of Rosemount, Minnesota and Larry Sawatzky of New Field, New York; grandchildren, Pamela, Taber, Ryan, Jared, Elaine, Zachary, Jessica and Jordan; 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; parents; grandchild, Danielle Sawatzky; sisters, Vera, Ruth and Maxine, and brother. Roger.
