LaMonte Helget passed away on March Friday, 10, 2017, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye.

LaMonte “Monte” Martin Helget was born on September 3rd, 1935, in Sleepy Eye. He was the only son and youngest child of Michael and Rose (Haala) Helget. Monte grew up on the family farm south of Sleepy Eye with his four older sisters. During his youth he attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Sleepy Eye, where he participated in several sports. As a young man, he enjoyed playing fast pitch softball for Leo’s Bombers.

On February 16, 1955, he married the love his life, Elaine Netzke. Together, Monte and Elaine had six children. Monte was a dairy farmer and loved his cows. He also loved his years working at Mathiowetz Construction of Sleepy Eye, where the people were not coworkers to him, but beloved friends.

When Monte wasn’t on his lawn mower, he enjoyed deer hunting weekends with his sons and grandsons, riding around in his Cadillac, playing cards, taking care of his dogs and spending time with his family. He had a nightly 6:30 p.m. date with his wife, Elaine, to watch the Wheel of Fortune. He was a devout Catholic and found comfort in reading his Bible and praying his rosary. He will always be remembered as a caring, selfless man who loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine of Sleepy Eye; children, Brad Helget of Sleepy Eye, Deb Hacker (Gary Beltz) of Olivia, Minnesota, Peggy (Mark) Seidl of Hanska, Minnesota and Doug (Rachel) Helget and Cheryl (Terry) Reynolds, all of North Mankato, Minnesota; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and sister, Marian (Val) Rathman of Comfrey, Minnesota.

Preceding him in death were his parents; son, Kevin and sisters, Lorraine Haecherl, Verena Krebs and Ivona Windschitl.
