Herman Rinne

Funeral services for 99-year-old Herman Rinne of St. James, Minnesota, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday morning, March 20, 2017, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. James. Reverend Martin Lopahs will be officiating. Special music will be provided by Klarice Rinne, Elle Ribbe and Herman’s nieces, great-nieces and great-great-nieces. The church is located at 315 9th Street South.

Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in St. James, with military honors provided by the St. James Veterans Honor Guard. The cemetery is south of St. James on Watonwan County Road 27.

Visitation will be at the church the day of the funeral service from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Herman Rinne passed away at the home of his sister-in-law on Thursday, March 15, 2017.

Herman Albert Henry Rinne was born on September 18, 1917 in St. James, the son of William C. and Emma (Graminske) Rinne. He was baptized on October 7, 1917 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in St. James by Reverend Pankow. Herman was confirmed on April 13, 1930, by Reverend Ernst Birkholz. He attended District 63 Country School for four years and after that, St. Paul’s Lutheran School. Herman was drafted into the United States Army on March 7, 1942. He served this country in North Africa and on the front lines in Italy under General George Patton at the height of World War II. He was discharged on November 7, 1945 at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin.

He was raised on the family farm and was a farmer all of his life.

Herman played the tenor banjo and coronet in the Minnesota Valley Orchestra in Mankato, Mankato. He enjoyed playing cards, listening to old time polka music, having coffee with his friends and collecting antique machinery. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in St. James.

Surviving Herman are his sister-in-law, Minnie Rinne of St. James; special nephew, Klarice Rinne of St. James; cousins and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William Jr. and Elmer and sisters, Lillian, Emma, Marie and Elsie.
