During February, the curiosity of Mountain Lake Public Elementary School (MLES) students in grades kindergarten-to-six was piqued during “I Love To Read” Month.

Under the 2017 theme, “Get Curious About Reading,” students and staff celebrated the diamond anniversary of Curious George – and encouraged curiosity, fact-finding, research – and the non-fiction section of the elementary library.

The month of activities kicked off on Tuesday, January 31 when Curious George’s human, The Man in the Yellow Hat (a.k.a. MLES Principal Karl Wassman), visited classrooms – and distributed George’s fave fruit – bananas – to students.

Fun during the month included:

+ Let’s Get Curious Times.

+ Dress-Up Days – The different dress-up days included:

  • Yellow Shirt and Tie Day honoring Curious George’s human.
  • Red for Valentine’s Day.
  • Hat Day.
  • PJ Day.

+ BINGO.

+ Stop, Drop and Read.

+ Curious George-Themed Thursday Lunch Meals – The cafeteria staff of Taher, Inc. served up special Thursday meals or treats. The four meals/treats were linked to four Curious George titles:

  • Curious George Makes Pancakes – pancakes for lunch.
  • Curious George and the Pizza Party – pizza for lunch.
  • Curious George and the Ice Cream Surprise – ice cream treat at lunch.
  • Curious George and the Chocolate Factory – brownie treat for lunch.

+ Curious Fact Friday – The MLES Student Council shared facts over the school intercome taken from the book, The Journey that Saved Curious George.

+ High School Readers – Mountian Lake Public High School students visited classrooms and shared their favorite books.

+ “I Love To Read” Month – Closed with a special treat.

+ Reading Igloo –  During the month, an exclusive reading nook in the MLES library, made up of milk jugs by kindergarten teachers Kelli Tucholke and Nicole James, was available to the elementary readers. The special reading area connected with the book, Curious George Builds an Igloo.

+ Celebration of the 113th birthday of Dr. Seuss (a.k.a. the late Theodor Geisel) – The fun will have an extension on Thursday, March 2 with green eggs and ham served in the cafeteria, celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss, featuring the meal talked about in Green Eggs and Ham.
