Wolverine girls, boys face Windom counterparts

 

 

It was a twin bill victory night for the Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverine girls and boys on Tuesday, January 3, as both teams successfully took on their counterparts from Windom on the Eagle’s hard court.

The girls were 20-point winners of their half of the double header, dropping Windom 50 to 30.

A rebound putback buzzer-beater by the Wolverines’ Aaron Fast decided the two-point victory, 63 to 61.

Wolverine girls over Windom, now at .500 for season

It was a strong night for Jewel Soutthivong as she paced the girls squad to a 20-point lead over the Eagles. Soutthivong scored 16 and nabbed four steals in MLA’s 50 to 30 victory. Liana Blomgren added 14 points and grabbed nine boards, while Taylor Naas tallied 10 points.

Madison Maras led the Eagles with 10 points.

At the half, MLA was up seven, 22 to 15, and continued to pad that cushion in the second stanza.

With the win, the Wolverines now are at .500 for the season with a 5-5 mark.

Windom is 3-7.

MLA hosts Heron Lake-Okabena on Friday. WA hosts Luverne on Friday.

The girls travel to Okabena on Friday, January 6 to take on Heron Lake-Okabena

MLA boys win with rebound putback buzzer-beater

As the buzzer sounded, senior Aaron Fast sank a putback rebound to seal the deal of a Wolverine win over Windom, 63 to 61. That game-winning tip-in came at the conclusion of a 38-point second half for MLA. At halftime, the Wolverines were trailing by seven, 32 to 25.

Windom’s Wyatt Minion had converted on a one-and-one for the Eagles with 15 seconds left just before MLA headed downcourt and Fast connected on the winning basket.

Levi Stoesz had 14 points, with Marcus Boyd tallying 12.

The Eagles had three in double figures, Minion scoring 22, Kaden Elder with 13 and Ryan Franz, 12.

The Wolverines are 8-2 on the season and will play in a Thursday, January 5 game at Lamberton against Red Rock Central.

Windom is 3-5 with the loss.
