Wolverine boys rally falls short

MLA drops Holiday Tourney game to Legacy Christian

In the waning moments of the 2016 Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Holiday Tourney game pitting the Wolverine varsity boys against Legacy Christian on the Mountain Lake Public School hard court, MLA pulled to within four, but could not complete the rally, losing to the guests, 66 to 58.

The Wolverines had fallen behind the Lions by 10 at the close of the first half, and spent the second half struggling to close the gap. After coming within four, Legacy was able to connect on free throws, and costly MLA turnovers sealed the final verdict.

From the field, the Wolverines shot 40% (20 or 49), with the Lions hitting for 46% (18 for 39). MLA had the advantage from three-point land, hitting 11 of 23 for 47% (seven of those by junior guard Weston Osland), with the visitors connecting on 6 of 18, for 33%. The charity stripe continued to be a challenge for MLA, again hitting 50% (7 of 14). The Lions connected on 24 of 33 from the line (72%). The taller Wolverines had the edge in rebounds, grabbing 31, Legacy with 23.

Osland led the MLA scorers with 21 pounds. He also claimed six rebounds, two assists and a duo of steals. Also in double digits were Levi Stoesz (11 points) and Aaron Fast and Marcus Boyd (each with 10 points). Stoesz recorded 6 boards and had three assists. Fast grabbed 15 rebounds, had two assists and two blocks. Boyd had six rebounds and one assist. Kris Menken wored hard on the boards as well, grabbing nine rebounds, and AJ Vongsy recorded five assists.

MLA’s season record is now 7-2.

In the previous day’s (Thursday, December 29) game against Cedar Mountain/Comfrey, MLA’s cold shooting from the floor led to a 12-point loss. 82 to 70.

On Tuesday, January 3, the squad takes on Windom on-the-road in a boys/girls doubleheader.,
