MLPS Holiday Concert run opens Monday

MLHS Junior/Senior High Choir/Band program opens series

The 2016 Holiday Concert run at Mountain Lake Public School (MLPS) opens on Monday, December 5 with the Mountain Lake Public High School (MLHS) Junior High and Senior High Choirs and Bands. The concert, to be held in the school’s auditorium, will begin at 7 p.m.

Vocal performers are under the direction of MLPS Director of Choirs Andrea Brinkman, with the instrumentalists led by MLPS Director of Bands Kurt Jahnke.

Junior High Choir will be sharing the following titles:

+ “Homeward Bound,” arranged by Jay Althouse. The selection will feature the duet of Olivia Klassen and Anika Fast.

+ “Hava Nagilah,” arranged by Joyce Eilers. The title of the song, in translation from Hebrew, is “Come, dance and sing! Come, celebrate!”

+ “Silent Night,” arranged by Greg Gilpin.

+ “Kuwa Na Krismasi Njema (African Christmas Greeting),” by Lois Brownsey and Marti Lunn Lantz. Translation from the original Swahili is “Merry Christmas to you.”

Senior High numbers to be performed include:

+ “Tumekuja Kuimba (We Have Come to Sing!),” by Lynn Zettlemoyer. The translation from Kenyan dialect is, “We are going to have a blast singing and we are glad you can come along for the ride.” Featured soloists will be Chloe Klassen, with participating percussionists, Ethan Klassen, Jaden Hoek, Joel Salgado and Zach Spinks.

+ “Goin’ Home,” arranged by Paul Langford, with Kurt Jahnke, accompanist.

+ “Veni, Veni Emmanuel,” arranged by Michael John Trotta. The text is Latin from, “Oh com, oh come Emmanuel.” Soloists on the selection will be Lily Kaufffman and Jareya Harder.

Song by the Senior High Choir Women will be:

+ “Gaudete!,” arranged by Michael Engelhardt. Small group performing includes Lily Kauffman, Jareya Harder, Liana Blomgren and Karen Soutthivong. Percussionists are Ethan Klassen, Zach Spinks and Josiah Gardiner.

Senior High Choir Men will present:

+ “Coffee (In A Cardboard Cup),” arranged by Kevin Robison.

Numbers to be performed by the Junior High Band include:

+ “African Bell Carol,” arranged by Robert W. Smith.

+ All is Well.”

+ “Jingle Bells and Jungle Drums.”

+ “Silent Night and All that Jazz.”

Senior High Band selections include:

+ “On This Day Earth Shall Ring.”

+ “A Christmas Hymn.”

+ A Mad Russian’s Christmas.”

+ Good King Wence-salsa.”

The following Monday, December 12, the Mountain Lake Public Elementary School (MLES) program will be presented, also beginning at 7 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. Leading the students in grades kindergarten-through-five will be MLES Music Teacher Sarah Tailowright, along with MLPS Director of Choirs Andrea Brinkman, leading the sixth-grade class and MLPS Director of Choirs Kurt Jahnke directing the fifth-grade band and sixth-grade band.

The MLPS Holiday Concert series will wrap up with the Java ‘N’ Jazz concert, 7 p.m., in the school auditorium.Various show choirs and instrumental groups will perform, organized by MLPS Director of Choirs Andrea Brinkman and MLPS Director of Bands Kurt Jahnke, along with Kelli Tucholke, Show Choir Choreographer.
