Irene Miest

irene-miestFuneral services for 91-year-old Irene Miest of St. James, Minnesota, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, November 3, 2016, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. James. The church is located at 315 9th Street South.

Interment will be in Mount Hope in rural St. James, located south of the city on Watonwan County Road 27.

Visitation will be at the church the day of the funeral service from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Sturm Funeral Home-St. James Chapel, is handling the arrangements.

Irene Miest passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James.

Irene Evelyn Oldenburg was born on the family farm in rural St. James on April 24, 1925, the daughter of George and Alma (Nelson) Oldenburg. She was baptized on May 20 at First Lutheran Church in St. James by Rev. M.K. Hartman and confirmed at Waverly Lutheran Church by Rev. P.B. Stensland. She attended country school in Martin County.

On June 2, 1944, she was united in marriage to Orville Miest.

Irene was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where she was a lifelong member of the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, volunteering and spending time with her family. She loved to travel and was an avid watcher of the Minnesota Twins.

She is survived by her children, Earl (Lynda) Miest of Manhatten, Montana, Joyce (Dale) Monroe of St. James, Karen (Chuck) Hansel of Dalton, Minnesota, Linda (James) Gronholz of North Mankato, Minnesota and James (Lisa) Miest of Center, North Dakota; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; sister, Janice Jensen; sisters-in-law, Lois Miest and Donna Miest and many nieces and nephews.
