Successful ‘Elementary Night’ for Wolverine boys

Down visiting Ellsworth Panthers by six; young students have a share in events

It was a successful “Elementary Night” for the Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverine boys basketball squads on Friday, February 5.

In the varsity title with the visiting Ellsworth Panthers, the Head Coach Shawn Naas-coached club claimed a six-point win, 68 to 62.

At the half, the Wolverines had a one-point lead, 32-31, but out-paced the Panthers in the second to claim the Red Rock Conference victory.

For MLA, junior guard Levi Stoesz swished the nets for 19 points. He added six boards and nabbed four steals. Teammate, senior guard Ryan McCue, delivered 14 points, as well as grabbing nine rebounds. Junior forward Aaron Fast and sophomore guard Marcus Boyd each nailed 10 points each, and Boyd dished out five assists.

Leading the Panthers were Brandon Kramer and Malik Herman, each scored 16. Herman also tallied 13 rebounds and four assists. Bobby Walkovaik scored 14.

The Wolverines now stand 13-6 overall, 11-2 in the Red Rock.

The club will now face Fulda on the Raiders’ home court on Tuesday, February 9. Due to last week’s blizzard, the already-rescheduled game due to weather with Edgerton Public will be at home on Thursday, February 11. The following day, Friday, February 12, MLA will host Murray County Central. Their regular season comes to a close against Lake Crystal/Wellcome Memorial (at Lake Crystal) on Tuesday, February 16.

MLES, MLC Elementary students shows their stuff

“Elementary Week” reached its high point on Friday, February 5, when elementary students from both Mountain Lake Public Elementary School (MLES) and Mountain Lake Christian (MLC) Elementary converged on the public school auditorium for “Elementary Night” as the Wolverines took on the Ellsworth Panthers.

A special section of seats was reserved just for elementary students. Prior to the varsity game, Mountain Lake Public Elementary School (MLES) sixth-grade students, led by the school’s vocal instructor, Andrea Brinkman, shared the National Anthem. Halftime entertainment was also scheduled for both the B-squad and varsity games. At the half of the B-game, kindergarten-through-third-grade Saturday basketball players performed. At the mid-game mark of the varsity game, winners of both the MLS and MLC grades 3-6 Free Throw contests were announced. Also at the varsity half, prizes were given away to registered elementary students.
