MLA girls win low-scoring conference contest

THE MOUNTAIN LAKE Area (MLA) Wolverines Varsity Girls Basketball squad, under Head Coach Wayne Klassen, The Wolverines are now at 8-7 on the season. Up next is a few days' break until they face Adrian on the Dragons' home court on Thursday, February 4. The following day, Friday, February 5, they stay on-the-road to Slayton to take on Murray County Central. Mt. Lake Area Girls BB vs. Fulda, originally scheduled for Feb. 8, has been rescheduled for Feb. 9. THE MOUNTAIN LAKE Area (MLA) Wolverines Varsity Girls Basketball squad, under Head Coach Wayne Klassen, held close to the Adrian in a conference contest at Adrian, but eventually the home team Dragons pulled off a nine-point win, 52-43. At the half, Adrian clung to a three-point lead, 29 to 26. Despite the loss, senior guard Signey Stoesz - who tallied 19 points on the night - notched her 1,000th point on a couple of three throws at the end of the first half. She also had 10 steals. Junior guard Brook Sunderman chipped in nine points. MLS is now 5-5 in the Red Rock Conference - 9-8 overall. Today (Friday, February 5) the girls stay on-the-road to Slayton to take on another Red Rock foe, Murray County Central. The home contest against the Fulda Raiders - originally scheduled for Monday, February 8 - has been moved to Tuesday, February 9. IT WAS A low-scoring game, but the Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverines Varsity Girls Basketball squad, under Head Coach Wayne Klassen, far outdistanced their guests, Heron Lake-Okabena, by 17, 47 to 30. At the end of the first half, the Wolverines had secured a comfortable 13-point lead at 27 to 14. Senior guard Signey Stoesz scored 20 of those points. Her sophomore sister, Marta Stoesz, chipped in nine points. Senior Bailey Swanson claimed eight boards and dished out two assists, while junior Liana Blomgren muscled seven rebounds. MLA advances to 12-8 overall and 9-5 in the conference tilt. Another Red Rock foe, Westbrook/Walnut Grove, will be in town this Friday, February 19. The MLA girls close out their regular season with a non-conference game at home with Madelia on Monday, February 22.
