Serving both near and far

MLC students in grades 7-12 participating in annual mission trips

Mountain Lake Christian (MLC) students in grades 7-12 are currently in the midst of serving both near and far during this year’s annual mission/service trips. Their theme, “Open Doors are Often Next Door,” is an accurate reflection of the Bible verse from which it was taken – Acts 1:8 (“And you will be my witness in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth”).

A group of six students and four adults are serving in Dakar, Senegal, located along Africa’s west coast, from Tuesday, January 19 through Tuesday, January 26. The group will experience school at Dakar Academy, an international school made up of students from more than 20 countries. From the Academy, the group will depart for an outreach to a remote Senegalese village where they will help in building foundations for two churches. Additionally, the team will build church benches, provide medical care and participate in nightly evangelism campaigns in support of a Senegalese pastor through drama and child evangelism teams.

Others are staying and serving a bit closer to home. From Wednesday, January 20 to Monday, January 25, MLC students and chaperones will work in Windom and the Twin Cities.

During the school day on Wednesday, January 20 and Thursday, January 21, students will work in Windom at both the Evangelical Free Church and the BARC (Business, Arts and Recreation Center). Cleaning, painting and organizing will be the name of the game for these two days of service to those “neighbors” living west of Mountain Lake.  Each organization has already expressed their appreciation for the students’ willingness to help them with their needs.

From Friday, January 22 to Monday, January 25, a group of 13 MLC students and three adults will travel to serve at The Central Mission, located in a diverse area of St. Paul. Students will help by painting and cleaning, and will provide nursery/childcare for the mission. Additionally, the mission is providing multicultural experiences for group members through meals and visits to area churches. On Monday, before the group returns, a stop will be made at Target Field to work for the Minnesota Brain Injury Association as they help prepare for Twinsfest.

Hear more about the service they did when the students return – and reflect on their work and experiences.
