THE WOLVERINE BOYS and girls doubleheader basketball games against the Windom Eagles were postponed due to winter weather conditions, and while the rescheduled games were played at Mountain Lake on Monday, January 11, southwest Minnesota weather again played a role. Some fresh snow on top of already-fallen deep snow depths, with added wicked wind gusts creating blowing low (and at times – no) visibility conditions and teeth-chattering wind chills, kept the guests at the local gym until driving conditions were deemed safe enough for careful travel back to Windom on Minnesota State Highway #60. (Both schools decided Monday night to start school two-hours late on Tuesday.) Meanwhile, both games played were well worth the price of admission. The Mountain Lake Area (MLA) boys squad took a tough one-point non-conference loss to the Eagles, 47-46. The Wolverines led at the half by six, 25-19 – and by seven with less than minute left to play. It was then at Windom’s Adam Farag hit two quick three, scored off of a couple of MLA turnovers, bringing the guests to within one point. The Wolverines missed their shot, and the Eagles’ Jeff Pfeffer was fouled with just two second left in the game. The senior hit both free throws, giving Windom the win. MLA senior Ryan McCue led all scorers with 21 points. He also claimed nine boards. For Windom, Pfeffer scored 16 points, with Farag scoring 12. Head Coach Shawn Naas’ club is now 7-4 overall. Next up for the boys is a Thursday, January 14 home game against Fulda. The boys/girls doubleheader against Southwest Minnesota Christian of Edgerton on “Coaches vs. Cancer” game day, is this Friday, January 15. The postponed home game against Edgerton will be played on Tuesday, February 2.
