Broadside accident sends woman, man to hospital in St. James

Occurred Wednesday morning near the intersection of Highway #4, Highway #30

A broadside-type accident at 10:51 a.m. on Wednesday morning, July 22, near the intersection of Highway #4 and Highway #30 in Watonwan County sent a California man and woman in one of the two vehicles involved to Mayo Health Systems-St. James by ambulance, both with non-life-threatening injuries.

Seventy-one-year-old Catherine G. Emery of Riverside, California, was the driver of a 2015 Hyundai Four-Door, with passenger, Robert G. Soman, 83, of Hemet, California.

The Minnesota State Highway Patrol report states that the Hyundai was westbound on Watonwan County Road #3 when it failed to yield to a 2004 International Semi, driven by Eugene H. Zimmerman, 71, of Comfrey, traveling north on Highway #4. The Hyundai pulled out in front of the semi, with the vehicles colliding.

Zimmerman had no apparent injuries.

The Hyundai received severe damage, while there was no damage to the International.

Assisting the Minnesota State Highway Patrol at the scene were the Watonwan County Sheriff’s Office and the St. James Ambulance Squad.
