MLC student fundraising success rewarded with fun and hijinks

A series of Mountain Lake Christian (MLC) fundraising success was awarded with fun and hijinks during a lyceum Monday afternoon, March 16, in the school’s gymnasium.

The top three fruit sales salespeople were recognized. They included, in first-place, Tyler Dick, selling $839 in fruit; Timothy Sellers in second with $807 in sales and in third, Joel Saldano, selling $740 in fruit. A total 556 boxes of fruit were sold, surpassing the goal (and last year’s total sales) of 525 boxes. The sales raised $11,113 for MLC.

In other fundraisers, the junior class raised $907 for this spring’s junior/senior event and the seniors raised $812 for their senior trip.

This fundraising success resulted in “squeals” of delight from studenst in grades pre-kindergarten-to-grade 12 as the retiring Dr. Bob Windel, school administrator, made good on his promise to kiss a pig(let) – a KBQ porcine brought to the school by the owner of the pig-raising facility, Steve Dick.

A final hurrah featured a contest pitting against each other the brains and knowledge of teachers Karin Stoesz of Cedar (grades 5 and 6), Nicole Meyer of physical education and keyboarding, Scott Raabe of Bible, history and literature and Aaron Petersen of vocal and instrumental music.

Those who answered questions incorrectly were subjected to the addition of a variety of liquids to their glass by students whose names were drawn from a bowl. The eclectic array of non-poisonous liquids included Diet Coke, Tang, Sierra Mist, pickle juice, tomato juice, milk, chocolate milk, grape Kool-Aid, peppermint herbal tea, blue Powerade and (cold) coffee.

At the end, it was “bottoms up” for the trio of those who answered the most questions wrong – Stoesz, Raabe and Petersen – and they courageously swigged the “beverages” before them. Meyer was saved from having to face-off with her drink mixture as she was the winner of the contest.

Following is a photo gallery of the lyceum’s activities:

AND THE “SMACK” is applied.

THE QUARTET OF MLC teachers participating in the knowledge contest write their answers on their respective white boards. From left, Scott Raabe, Karin Stoesz, Nicole Meyer and Aaron Petersen. At right are Vonda Sellers, mistress of ceremonies for the lyceum and Nikki Petersen, who drew from a bowl the names of students able to add their choice of provided liquids to the glass of a teacher – or teachers – who answered a question incorrectly.

THREE “Cs” AND one “B” are the answers. “B” is the correct choice, so Nicole Meyer is the only instructor NOT to have a liquid choice to her glass. In front of the teachers are those non-poisonous liquid choices – from left, Diet Coke, Tang, Sierra Mist, pickle juice, tomato juice, milk, chocolate milk, grade Kool-Aid, peppermint herbal tea, blue Powerade and (cold) coffee.

TEACHER NICOLE MEYER answered “tadpoles” to the question, “What is a group of frogs called?” Close – but – not quite. Tadpoles are the larval stage in the life cycle of an amphibian, like a frog. But – a group of frogs is called an “army.”

TEACHER KARIN STOESZ reacts with expressive disgust over what is being added to her glass of mixed liquids – due to the fact that she incorrectly answered a question.

NICOLE MEYER GETS a “high five” for having successfully answered the most answers correctly – and ending up with the least amount of liquid mixture in her glass. Which meant . . . the other three teachers had to down the liquids that had been stewing in their glasses.

SCOTT RAABE, TOO, downs his special beverage –  and it was indeed “good to the last drop.”
