Pre-season meet for varsity speakers
Four of the Mountain Lake Christian (MLC) “Speechies” competed in the Chanhassen STORM Speech Tournament this past Saturday, January 24. This is a high-intensity speech meet with 1,420 students from several states taking part in the competition. Many of the competitors at the meet compete year-round – and several have competed at the national level.
There were novice and varsity divisions for all categories. Most categories had more than 65 entries in each division.
The Chanhassen meet is a pre-season competition for MLC, providing an opportunity for the team’s varsity speakers to take on a great challenge and to learn from talented peers.
The MLC students who participated performed well, however, none placed.
Competing for MLC were:
* Elijah Stoesz – Senior – Varsity Original Oratory and Varsity Informative.
* Caitlyn Smith – Senior – Varsity Poetry and Varsity Prose.
* Josh Raabe – Junior – Varsity Humorous.
* Melissa Lohrenz – Junior – Varsity Poetry.
Also on the 2015 MLC Speech Team, but not competing at Chanhassen are:
* Melissa Lohrenz – Junior – in her second category, Original Oratory.
* Danica Dick – Sophomore – Varsity Storytelling.
* Katelyn Fast – Sophomore – Varsity Prose.
The MLC Speech Team coach is Kim Friesen.
This Friday, January 30 and Saturday, January 31, several team members will be competing at another premier two-day tournament, this one in Marshall. regular season kicks off on Saturday, February 7, with a speech meet at Worthington.
