Sounds of the season

MLES holiday concert kicks off series of public school programs

The arrival of December means the sounds of the Christmas holiday season. The Mountain Lake Public Elementary School (MLES) students in grades kindergarten-through-six will kick off a series of three public school concerts on Monday evening, December 8, beginning at 6:45 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. (Students are to be in their classrooms by 6:20 p.m.)

Each of the grade levels, along with the 5th- and 6th-grade bands will be performing throughout the evening.

Some of the traditional pieces to be shared include “O Come Little Children,” “Quest of the Three Kings” and an arrangement of “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas” by the 5th-grade band. The 6th-grade band will be performing arrangements of “The Nutcrackers” and “The Hallelujah Chorus.”

There will also be presented many new holiday selections. The kindergarteners are eager to share a Christmas song about building a gingerbread house and the sounds of Santa’s workshop. The 5th-grade will also be sharing a recorder song, plus a number featuring several bell instruments. The 6th-grade classes will perform a number in Spanish entitled, “Duermete” and an upbeat number called, “Swing Into Christmas.”

The program is under the direction of Christine Johnson, Andrea Brinkman and Kurt Jahnke.

The high school’s Haydn to Hip Hop class will be hosting a bake sale at the elementary concert to raise funds to go on a trip in June to Tennessee – to the Memphis/Nashville areas – the heart of where Rock-N-Roll  was “king.” It was from this locale such music evolved. The bake sale will start at 6 p.m., will be closed during the concert – but reopening following the program.

Remaining concerts this holiday season include:

* Monday, December 15 – Junior High/Senior High Bands and Choirs, 7 p.m., school auditorium.

* Monday, December 22 – Java-N-Jazz featuring the jazz bands, show choirs, percussion ensemble, small groups and solos. New this year will be a free-will donation collected at the door, with each guest receiving a little treat. The desserts/drinks will be prepared by Amberly Hulzeos, Mountain Lake Public Elementary School second-grade teacher and owner/operator of Sweets By Am and Mountain Lake Public High School ag teacher Stephen Funk’s World Foods class, 7 p.m., in the school auditorium/gymnasium.
