linus weissFuneral services for 91-year-old Linus Weiss of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, December 20 2014, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. The church is located at 636 1st Avenue North.

Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, located at 720 3rd Avenue, N.E. in Sleepy Eye.

Officiant for the services will be Monseigneur Eugene Lizinski.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 19, 2014, at Sturm Funeral Home-Sleepy Eye, located at 301 3rd Avenue S.W., and again at the funeral home on Saturday morning, December 20, 2014, from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Linus William Weiss passed away on Friday, December 12, 2014 at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye, where he had resided for 1½ years.

Linus was born in Sleepy Eye on May 9, 1923, the son of Lawrence and Anna (Saffert) Weiss, the second of eight children. He attended country school through the 8th grade. He worked as a farm hand for various farmers until he was drafted into the United States Army for service in World War II. He served almost two years as a sergeant on the enemy lines in the Philippines. Linus was honorably discharged when the war ended in 1946.

He married Monica Sieg three days prior to his drafting date on October 9, 1944. They lived their entire life in Sleepy Eye, and resided in his home for 68 years. They were blessed with 12 children.

He worked for Del Monte Corporation for a short time upon return from the service, and then worked 41 years full-time for Farmers Elevator of Sleepy Eye. He continued to work during the spring and harvest seasons for the Farmers Elevator for an additional six-plus years.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye.

In his retirement years he enjoyed going to his lake home and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Monica; son, Linus Weiss Jr; sons-in-law: Rick Fischer and Timothy Nachreiner; brother: Victor Weiss; brothers-in-law: Leo Krueger, Frank Wensauer, Walt Riebel, John McSherry, James Doyle,William Current, Leo Sieg, Frederick Sieg, Eugene Sieg and Kenneth Sieg and sisters-in-law: Rita Kleis and Mary Knickerbocker.
