Four-lane traffic between Butterfield, St. James will soon flow – Update

Weather conditions delay Highway #60 opening to Monday

Update: The opening of the two additional lanes on Highway #60 from Butterfield to St. James has been delayed until Monday, October 6 due to wet weather prohibiting the striping.

It had earlier been scheduled to be open to four-lane traffic either late Tuesday afternoon, September 30 or on Wednesday, October 1.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution on the new four-lane as crews will need to make adjustments to signing, turn lanes and guardrails after the additional lanes are open to traffic.

The project consisted of grading, paving and bridge work for two additional lanes south of the current two lanes. It was a two-year project with grading, connections and bridge work in 2013 and paving and final bridge work in 2014. Motorists will have six more miles of improved mobility and safety on Highway #60.

Mathiowetz Construction of Sleepy Eye is the contractor on the $14 million project from Butterfield to St. James.

This is the first of three projects planned to complete the expansion of Highway 60 to a four-lane facility. The gap between Butterfield and Mountain Lake is scheduled for construction in 2015 and the section from Mountain Lake to Windom is planned to begin in 2017.
