Ruth attended county school in rural Minnesota and later graduated from Mountain Lake Public High School. She had to board in Mountain Lake due to no school transportation. She and her parents were very motivated that she complete her education. Ruth completed training as a teacher in Blue Earth, Minnesota and taught in county school. She had a remarkable memory for the Bible, poems, catechism and peoples’ names.

Ruth married Rudy Schoewe on September 12, 1943. They have been married for over 70 years. Ruth and Rudy farmed in Kimball Township on the Schoewe homestead until they moved to Trimont in 1980. Ruth enjoyed farming and took an active role in using tractors for planting and cultivating, and assisted when needed in helping with the livestock. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, baking, recipe collecting, quilting and attending softball and baseball games.

She wanted to be a “great mother-in-law” to her daughters’-in-law and made every effort to support two new young farm wives and mothers.

Ruth was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease later in life. Ruth and her daughter, Mary, often spent a couple of days after Thanksgiving doing a marathon of Christmas shopping and baking as an annual holiday craft project to celebrate the holidays. Ruth was determined to stay active and keep doing things she enjoyed. Later on, Rudy began to do the cooking and to care for her. Ruth could no longer coo,k but she explained how to prepare her favorites and Rudy became a very good cook. Ruth and Rudy brought new meaning to the marriage vows and continued to care for each other until her death.
