Focus of MLPS Choral Pops Concert; HSRA students in special performance

Movietime memories will be revisited this Monday, May 12, as the Mountain Lake Public School Music Department presents its 2014 spring Choral Pops Concert – “A Night at the Movies” – beginning at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium. And since audience members will be kicking back with movie music, popcorn will be served.

In addition, students from the High School for the Recording Arts (HSRA) in St. Paul, will be sharing a special performance. The school’s music appreciation class, “From Haydn to Hip Hop,” taught by Andrea Brinkman, had earlier taken a trip to visit the students and the school.

Senior High Hosts will be Jenny Wright and Andrew Hempeck, with Jae Faber and Regan Syverson serving as Junior High Hosts.

The school’s vocal director is Andrea Brinkman. Kelli Tucholke is the choreographer for the Junior High and Senior High Show Choir numbers, and Kurt Jahnke, the school’s instrumental director, is the guitar instructor for students sharing a song.

The line-up for the evening’s entertainment will include:

* The Senior High Women will sing the song “Safe & Sound,” by Taylor Swift and arranged by Mark Brymer, from the movie, “The Hunger Games.

* The Junior High Show Choir will follow with two numbers, “Life is a Highway” from the Disney movie, “Cars,” by Tom Cochrane, arranged by Alan Billingsley as well as “ROAR!” by Katy Perry, arranged by Mark Brymer, from television’s “The X Factor.”

* “Say Something,” by Great Big World, will be the number by the Junior High Guitar Class, featuring vocal soloist, Rachel Dukes. *

“Skyfall,” by Adele and arranged by Paul Langford, from the movie “Skyfall: James Bond 007” will be the song sung by the Junior High Choir.

* A special guest appearance by the 2014 Mountain Lake Public High School Student Talent Show Winner, Reynaldo Capetillo, will put on display his personalized street dancing.

* The Junior High Girls will also present one selection, “Breakaway,” by Kelly Clarkson, arranged by Alan Billingsley, from the movie, “Princess Diaries 2.”

* “Cups” by A. P. Carter and Luisa Gerstein and arranged by Roger Emerson, from “Pitch Perfect,” will be the next song on tap by the Junior High Choir, featuring choir members Maritza Lopez, Brittany Garnica, Maurissa Isaacs, Kristina Vongkaenchanh and Jaelin Renquist. The Junior High Choir will complete their part of the concert with the song from the movie “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Jai Ho,” by A. R. Rahman, arranged by Mark Brymer.

* Senior High Show Choir participants will present two songs, “It Had Better Be Tonight,” by Henry Mancini, arranged by Kirby Shaw, from the movie, “The Pink Panther,” as well as “Unwritten,” by Natasha Bedingfield and Steve Zegree, from NBC television show, “Clash of the Choirs.”

* Special guests from the High School for the Recording Arts (HSRA) in St. Paul, Minnesota, will perform their number.

* A trio of songs by the Senior High Choir will follow. The numbers will be “Bohemian Rhapsody,” by Queen and arranged by Mark Brymer from “Wayne’s World,” along with senior recognition during the song, “Fix You” by Coldplay, arranged by Adam Anders and Peer Astrom, as taken from the television show, “Glee” and closing with “Bellas Finals,” arranged by Mark Brymer, from “Pitch Perfect.

* The closing number will feature a Mass Choir of grades 6 through 12 on a medley of songs, as arranged by Mark Brymer, from the Disney movie, “Frozen.”
