Accident sends two to hospitals in Sioux Falls, Windom

Jeep Wrangler rear-ends Freightliner semi

* Update: As of Tuesday morning, June 30, reports from the families of Avery and Rachel Herrig note that Avery remains in Sanford Health in Sioux Falls in serious, but stable, condition, and faces a long recovery; Rachel suffered minor injuries.

A rear-end type accident on Minnesota State Highway #60, at 5:42 p.m. on Monday, June 29, sent a husband and wife to hospitals in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Windom. The accident occurred at Milepost 46 along #60 in Bingham Lake, just east of the east entrance to PJs II.

According to a report by the Minnesota State Highway Patrol, a 2010 Jeep Wrangler, driven by 25-year-old Avery E. Herrig of Windom, with passenger Rachel M. Herrig, 22, also of Windom, as well as a 2011 Freightliner Cascadia semi-truck, driven by 31-year-old Jibril Rahmeto of Minneapolis, were both traveling westbound on #60. The vehicles collided when the Jeep rear-ended the Freightliner.

Avery Herrig was airlifted by North Memorial air care helicopter from its base location at Redwood Area Hospital in Redwood Falls to Sanford Health in Sioux Falls with serious injuries. Rachel Herrig was transported to Windom Area Hospital by Windom Ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries. Jibril Rahmeto had no apparent injuries.

The Jeep Wrangler was considered a total loss, while the Freightliner received moderate damage.

The Windom Fire Department, Windom Police Department, om Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office and Mountain Lake Police Department also assisted the Minnesota State Highway Patrol at the accident scene.
