The Lake Commission in support of Mountain Lake, held its regular monthly meeting on Monday, March 14. Members noted this area’s spring fever, and honed the group’s projects geared towards summertime at the lake.

It was reported that the ice on Mountain Lake is almost out, and that Commission Members Jim Peterson and Jay Schied had removed the “Thin Ice” signs earlier on the day on Monday. In addition, the push is on to get the weed harvester set to go. Last year, harvesting began on May 13. Jean Haberman, a Commission Member, will arrange a lake clean-up date with Matt Anderson.

An additional topic of discussion was the beach area at the lake. Under consideration is the addition of a grill and picnic table at the location. A sand volleyball court could also be potentially added at that spot.

The Lake Commission will hold a work day this Saturday, March 19, to work on the floating dock. Peterson and Schied will move the structure to the beach area.

Dave Bucklin, Commission Member, presented a report on the Mountain Lake Golf Course sediment basin. He has found a similar project in the Heron Lake Watershed District which would place the golf course sediment basin project under the 75% state cost share guidelines. The remaining 25% for the project could be locally-provided labor or materials. Bucklin will draw up a plan, with pricing, to submit to the Mountain Lake City Council. In addition, he noted that the plunge pool repair would also fall under the 75% state cost share. Bucklin’s final point was that he will be submitting a request for $4,000 from the County Invasive Species grant for weed harvester operation expenses.

Planning ahead, too, for the Mountain Lake Trail

In discussion on the Mountain Lake Trail, Peterson stated that he will get pricing for steel siding to use as a weed barrier by the willows. Meanwhile, Schied plans on cutting volunteer trees that have grown up among the riprap between the old dam and the new dam. He has also spent many hours cutting down a large number of buckthorn units and has trimmed a tree that had been hanging over the lake grail on Haberman’s land on the route’s southwest end. Mountain Lake City Clerk/Administrator Wendy Meyer, who was in attendance at the meeting, said that she will order four “Slow – Curve” signs for the trail. She also noted that the city crew will soon be installing the information kiosk for the trailhead park by Casey’s.
